I'm going to recap the LCD DC-DC in my Epson HX-20; It's pretty dim, especially when the battery voltage is what it should be; looking at the vLCD with a scope, it's getting nowhere near a smoothish 7v like the TmH says it should be. And at least one of the 10uF caps (c6) on it looks grungy at the bottom.

I've a "old #astronomy software" side project and I'm looking for the early Mac software "StarMap" or "Star Map" from Bruce Webster.
So far my searches came up empty, but I'm not a specialist in old Mac software.
Does anyone have a copy of this app?
It's described in detail in a July 1985 BYTE article: #retrocomputing

A comment by yours truly on a YouTube video. It reads "I would ditch the Tesla if I were you. The CEO of the company is a literal Nazi, the cars can easily be fooled by a Wile E. Coyote prank (as demonstrated by the wonderful Mark Rober), and did I mention the CEO of the company is a LITERAL NAZI. I would go for something like a Rivian instead, those are actual self-driving cars that don't pose a safety risk to pedestrians and other drivers, and the company is not owned by a _LITERAL NAZI_ Ver…

Well yeh that's why my Epson HX-20's 'charge battery' triggers - the detector input is indeed dropping below the 1.2v threshold with serial running (and microcassette connected albeit idle). So the voltage detector is triggering at the right voltage.
It could just be the lack of real batteries I guess, but hmm, getting there.
#retrocomputing

An oscilloscope trace screenshot. A rather noisy trace has a sharp low going spike where it's triggered, Vmin is shown as 1.15v.
It's a very naughty spike.

«How to Write a Computer Manual» found by accident on one of my many wanderings through the internet. The half-title says “Jonathan Price and the staff of the User Education Group in the Apple II Division of Apple Computer, Inc.” The book was released in 1984. #vintagecomputing #retrocomputing

I think I found the problem with my Mac LC III's power supply...
Couldn't figure out why some things had lights (ZuluSCSI and network card) but not the system board. The yellow is the 12V connection...and it's corroded and broken the pin off. All the 5V stuff was working.
In a timely turn of events, the replacement pins and connector come today.

They look so nice and clean when they are fresh out of the post-recapping bath. No more dust or capacitor scum or flux. Almost like the day it came off the assembly line.
The Mac Centris 610 is mine and my son made the other two. I just washed them in alcohol to clean them up for him.

Some more Epson HX-20 observations:
a) Life was hard before self-contained DC-DC converters were available
b) 1300baud? wth would you do 1300 baud on the microcassette?
c) The 232 interface is ludicrously complex spit over the two CPUs.
d) The manuals are wonderfully detailed - although not necessarily consistent.

PSA: isc-dhcp-server >~3.0 sets the 'siaddr' in offers to 0 unless you set the next-server entry for a server; and Javastations don't like that. They used to set it to the server IP, like god intended.
(Yours after many hours of debug, bisection, tcpdump and reading the dhcp spec).
So if you're reading old config guides for old machines and using a modern DHCP server...

I'm starting to play with an Epson HX-20; interesting little portable from the early 80s.
I've just figured out the tape has a file from August 1984. It's a basic file called TILL, now if I can get the serial working reliably I can dump it, but I'm having a problem of it complaining about battery voltage which seems common on it. Some playing needed.

It's June, so I've got my Javastation off the shelf for the first time in a couple of decades. This is a Javastation Krups, with 100MHz sparc, sold as a diskless workstation. I never realised it had a PPP ROM boot in! Anyway, I should get on and set up networking and a boot server.
(Note: the plastic on the clips on the doors is fragile, 2 just pinged off on me)
#retrocomputing

A screenshot of the 'JavaOS PPP dialer' - it's got a Motif style widgetry, a Sun purpley theme, a Java logo in the corner and some options and progress bar.
A screenshot, showing a Java logo in the corner, 'JavaStation' in big at the top and an icon that looks like a SIMM, probably indicating ROM boot.
The side of a JavaStation Krups, it's shape is ...odd. Quite smooth, ovalish in cross section, on the side is a Java logo, and there's another on the top, It's mostly grey with two wings at the back in Purple and some cooling vents inbetween.
The back of a Sun Javastation Krups with it's doors open, showing the audio jacks, Mini DINs for power, mouse and keyboard, LAN and VGA.
