The First Swallows: Enlarged version of a plaster model created in 1964 by Juozas Mikėnas. To obtain the approval of the Soviet authorities, it was claimed that the sculpture was intended to honor Soviet cosmonauts. However, after Lithuania regained its independence, this false image was quickly dispelled. Today, the First Swallows symbolize Lithuania, and the birds rising from the palm symbolize freedom.
