I didn't get eye protection so I'm watching the partial eclipse with a home-built pigeon-hole camera. Peak cineastic drama.
#SolarEclipse #SolarEclipse2026

A bright spot on the paper of a pigeon-hole camera showing the sun as it is partially covered by the moon.

Here is another documentary about the looong 11 July 1991 total #SolarEclipse, this time set in La Paz, Baja California Sur, Mexico (where yours truly had been, too): youtube.com/watch?v=_p5cbMrdb5w - many prominent eclipse chasers and scientists make an appearance, too many of them already deceased by now. And there is also a Canadian documentary at youtube.com/watch?v=R6qu8vFzvbA - with material from many places including the best corona (and prominences) in minutes 19-22.

A group of IMPRS doctoral researchers got to experience the total solar eclipse in Spain yesterday. Here is a picture taken during totality. Location: Mambrilla de Castrejón, Burgos, Spain, Photographer: Betty Tsai.

35 years ago today a particularly long total #SolarEclipse hit Hawaii and Central and South America - of which astronomers on #MaunaKea made ample use as the legendary #WGBH documentary "Eclipse of th Century" shows: youtube.com/watch?v=JRI5FEQbn7o = archive.org/details/Eclipseoft (my favorite scene is in minute 45-46 when astronomers rush out of a telescope control room during totality to marvel at the eclipse with their own eyes). See also diary4dan.wordpress.com/2016/0 and skyweek.wordpress.com/2026/07/ ("Eine ungewöhnlich lange Totale Sonnenfinsternis") for further memories of that event I've found online 10 years ago and today.

And arguably the most amazing #SolarEclipse frontpage today ... which expands into the back page. Eclipse coverage quite often gets so creative, seen it a lot in South Anerica.

In continuation of my Sahagún #SolarEclipse totality series here is some fun during second partiality: see skyweek.wordpress.com/2026/08/ for more timesteps (and eclipse pics having come in from elsewhere).

Sneak peak at the outstandingly beautiful Total #SolarEclipse over Sahagún, Spain, 1/2 hour ago: see The eclipse from Sahagún, Spain - see facebook.com/dan.fischer.393/p for 33 quickly processed timesteps.

Final Sahagún sunset before the #SolarEclipse, from the primary observing site of our group, overlooking the small city - some sky color / extinction effect from a new big wildfire 33 km to the NW is evident but didn't affect the clarity of the magnified image much. So optimism prevails for tomorrow ...

Another visit to our favorite Sahagún bar ... and another regional newspaper found lying around: the Diario de #León had devoted pages 2 to 8 of the August 11 issue to the #SolarEclipse, here the beginning of an article about the events #ESA will be holding there - see also esa.int/ESA_Multimedia/Videos/

Never seen such a weather prediction three days before a Total #SolarEclipse for the very place where I intend to be. ;-) This is from kachelmannwetter.com/de/vorher for Saragún, Spain, where we should arrive tomorrow: see nitter.net/cosmos4u/status/208 for the growing thread with teaser pics from our journey. (And nitter.net/AEMET_Esp/status/20 for the current cloud forecast for all of Spain, with most places expected to be clear.)

Cloud prediction for the total #SolarEclipse from x.com/AEMET_Esp/status/2085752 - they think it's already more precise than statistics (which had the northern coast cloudier than the rest, too).

In case you didn't know ... the #SolarEclipse in 5 days is 'powered by Audi' and the 'astronomical event of the century' - or so NG's Spanish edition tells you. :-) Raw impressions from our fabulous trip in the thread nitter.net/cosmos4u/status/208 - turns out to be the best place to post quickly while on the road.

The Spanish weather service now promises reliable cloud forecasts 5 days before the August 12th Total #SolarEclipse: aemet.es/documentos/es/conocer = the study "Estudio de la predictibilidad de la nubosidad del sistema IFS del Centro Europeo para el eclipse del 12 de agosto 2026" making the case, aemetblog.es/2026/08/04/con-cu = a blog story summarizing the paper, and aemet.es/es/web/noticias/2026/ = a press release about all the eclipse wx services AEMET will offer starting August 7th - there's a lot to bookmark.
