A group of IMPRS doctoral researchers got to experience the total solar eclipse in Spain yesterday. Here is a picture taken during totality. Location: Mambrilla de Castrejón, Burgos, Spain, Photographer: Betty Tsai.

Here is another documentary about the looong 11 July 1991 total #SolarEclipse, this time set in La Paz, Baja California Sur, Mexico (where yours truly had been, too): youtube.com/watch?v=_p5cbMrdb5w - many prominent eclipse chasers and scientists make an appearance, too many of them already deceased by now. And there is also a Canadian documentary at youtube.com/watch?v=R6qu8vFzvbA - with material from many places including the best corona (and prominences) in minutes 19-22.

Will the #SolarCorona look like this come 12 August and the Total #SolarEclipse? The Spanish government thinks so, based on a #simulation - iac.es/en/outreach/news/iac-an - by the Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias (IAC) in collaboration with Predictive Science Inc.: ciencia.gob.es/Noticias/2026/j

35 years ago today a particularly long total #SolarEclipse hit Hawaii and Central and South America - of which astronomers on #MaunaKea made ample use as the legendary #WGBH documentary "Eclipse of th Century" shows: youtube.com/watch?v=JRI5FEQbn7o = archive.org/details/Eclipseoft (my favorite scene is in minute 45-46 when astronomers rush out of a telescope control room during totality to marvel at the eclipse with their own eyes). See also diary4dan.wordpress.com/2016/0 and skyweek.wordpress.com/2026/07/ ("Eine ungewöhnlich lange Totale Sonnenfinsternis") for further memories of that event I've found online 10 years ago and today.

Still going through numerous recorded webcasts and TV broadcasts of the ecent Total #SolarEclipse on YouTube - and finding to my surprise that many of the experienced groups or large TV channels blew it right at second contact which is arguably the most important moment for the audience: image out of focus, solar crescent just leaving the FOV, using an H-alpha telescope only which is counter-productive for total eclipses etc. From what I've seen so far the clear winner remains the feed from Iceland of all places, mentioned earlier in the thread, and in facebook.com/groups/SolarEclip I mention four other interesting cases - and ask for links to other winners. Know any?

@cosmos4u@scicomm.xyz
2026-08-22 23:50:11

Talking about the #SolarEclipse and #Iceland missing out completely as many believe ... but that's not entirely true as the recorded live stream #totality strip shows (the preview image sucks): from 1:02 it got clear 2 minutes and 11 seconds with the Sun 25° up - but the place was so inaccessible that apparently hardly anyone except the TV crew set up there. The feed from which was shown in TV news around the globe, though.

A new perspective on the 12 August Total #SolarEclipse, from a Russian weather satellite on a #Molniya orbit, showing Europe (with few clouds in Spain while Iceland is invisible) from above, in contrast to the slant view from a geostationary wx sat, with the Moon's #umbra proceeding south: two processed stills from the animation x.com/conspiracyslyr/status/20 - which lead yet another link-a-thon with more eclipse stuff at the bottom of skyweek.wordpress.com/2026/08/

And finally here is a most unexpected picture I just found looking through my #SolarEclipse images from Sahagún, Spain, taken experimentally before totality w/o a filter, for the first time in detail: a bird next to the solar crescent, caught in flight with 1/16,000 second at f/8 and ISO 200 - which the autofocus thankfully found more interesting than the astronomical event in the background ...

A huuuuuuuge collection of links to stories about and sometimes very unusual visuals of the #SolarEclipse this month has just been finished at skyweek.wordpress.com/2026/08/ - next task: looking through and annotating the numerous webcasts of or long and short videos already produced about the eclipse ... but this will naturally take a while longer.

Final Sahagún sunset before the #SolarEclipse, from the primary observing site of our group, overlooking the small city - some sky color / extinction effect from a new big wildfire 33 km to the NW is evident but didn't affect the clarity of the magnified image much. In case you didn't know ... the #SolarEclipse in 5 days is 'powered by Audi' and the 'astronomical event of the century' - or so NG's Spanish edition tells you. :-) Raw impressions from our fabulous trip in the thread nitter.net/cosmos4u/status/208 - turns out to be the best place to post quickly while on the road.

Never seen such a weather prediction two days before a Total #SolarEclipse for the very place where I have just arrived. ;-) This is from kachelmannwetter.com/de/vorher for Saragún, Spain, where we should arrive tomorrow: see nitter.net/cosmos4u/status/208 for the growing thread with teaser pics from our journey. (And nitter.net/AEMET_Esp/status/20 for the lastest cloud forecast for all of Spain just in, with most places expected to be clear.)
