I was trying to explain to someone that virtual appliances can't be patched using 'yum update' and had the lead of our change review board not understand.
He was insisting that it would work, so I had to throw down the gauntlet and say "I'm sorry your wrong."
In which he retorted like a child, "well, this is my meeting so I that means I'm right."

Do they donate money to Gentoo? They don't. And if they did, it would probably come with obligations making this not worth it.
Do they contribute back? Rarely, and if they do, they are unreliable. They benefit more than we do. They just want to dump the packages they need, quickly duct taped together, so that we would maintain them going forward. Their employees rarely reveal that they're paid to do this, and if they do, it's not so they'd be held to higher standards, but to emphasize their importance: "you must placate us."
Well, sometimes they hire Gentoo developers. It's nice that these developers get some gratification for their work, especially if they're able to continue contributing on work time. But in the end, company priorities win. We are either left with loads of new packages with no maintainer and unclear significance, or a Google employee who appeared every once in a while to dump a bunch of ChromeOS patches and never bothered handling the fallout.
So, sorry, but I'd rather care for volunteers who want to make Gentoo better, than companies who see some profit incentive in it.
PS. I'm probably focusing too much on the negative aspects, and we likely had some positive interactions that are far less known and usually don't meet with such fanfare.

An actual job-guarantee is a brilliant plan, if you combine it with national ownership of the public infrastructure and a new national worker-owned co-op, you could actually revitalize the country and take some wealth back from the multinational private corporations and into actual unalienable British hands.
Start BritCo: the British Co-op.
The state will subsidize worker's wages, in that anyone who wants a job is guaranteed one at the BritCo on minimum wage and if BritCo can't make profit from it then they get welfare money to train them up till they can.
BritCo is owned entirely and inalienably by the workers, past and present, with one share for every hour worked which can not be sold or paid at any other rate. Wages may differ, be more for skilled work than the minimum paid for training, but ownership is one share per hour worked (including during training).
BritCo's mission is to rebuild the national infrastructure.
Fix the pipes, clean the rivers, upgrade the grid, build open nationally-controlled software systems, hardware production, build green energy, build national wealth and infrastructure and make it owned not by private international capital but by the workers who built it.
The state must not own BritCo. Its workers do. So BritCo can't be privatized by a mis-elected 'conservative' government.
Everything currently 'royal' becomes BritCo. Owned by the workers. So do many previously nationalized industry. Compensate current owners if you must, I'd just renationalize it without recompense. Wasn't really the state's to sell you mate. Stolen property. Sorry.

#Gentoo PSA: due to my oversight, upgrading sys-kernel/gentoo-kernel-bin to the latest versions on every branch does not result in /usr/src/linux symlink being updated. I will try to fix it in 10 hours.
A workaround is to update the symlink manually or remove it and run `emerge --config gentoo-kernel-bin`. You may need to run `@module-rebuild` afterwards.
This is a one time problem. Once the symlink is updated (or becomes invalid, e.g. through --depclean), subsequent upgrades will update it correctly.

Some people think that #LLM usage costs rising will start undoing some of the harm caused by the #AI hype. I don't think that's really going to help that much.
I'm not even talking about all the projects that were ensloppified and enshittified already. I'm not talking about all the technical debt. I'm not talking about all the forks that will have to be maintained forever. I'm not talking of all the projects that were abandoned because of burnout, or because they were only hype-oriented. And I'm not talking about all the corporations that will continue submitting slop.
I'm talking about the loss of trust. After all, we're not talking of people who realized they were wrong and are sorry. We're not talking of people realizing that it was wrong to forfeit ethics and morals in the name of "productivity". We're talking of people who are jumping ships because their previous approach turned out not to be profitable anymore. We're talking of gamblers who left the casino because they went broke. They aren't sorry that they gambled; they are sorry that they've lost. And they'd be happy to do it again at the nearest opportunity.
So, I'm sorry to say, but #FreeSoftware is never going to be the same again. A lot of people have shown their true colors, and I won't forget that.
