This morning I did a full backup of /home, reformatted that partition on the laptop as btrfs, and restored. Apart from nearly forgetting to update fstab with the new UUID it went seamlessly, although took a couple of hours.
Anyway I now have all the inodes I could ever want, as well as all the other btrfs goodness.

I'm now pretty certain that whoever said "Let's use 192.168... subnets for this" did that to annoy - or as a gigantic prank. And I salute you for it.

Question for #sysadmin folk: have you ever been required to sign a contract holding you financially liable for any 'mistakes' traced to your action? In 50 years no one ever dared ask me to sign such, and would have got a lecture and a walk-away if they did.
