These tropical trees breathe at night to survive drought
Some tropical trees have evolved a clever way to survive drought by taking in carbon dioxide at night, allowing them to keep their pores closed during the hot daytime and conserve water. By comparing three Clusia species, researchers discovered that this water-saving form of photosynthesis, known as CAM, did not arise through a single evolutionary change. Instead, ancient genome duplications followed by millions of years of genetic reshuffling produced strikingly different strategies, from stro…

Rare palm tree rediscovered in Madagascar after nearly 100 years
Researchers have tracked down 28 individuals of a palm tree species last recorded in Madagascar nearly 100 years ago. Nearly every tree of the species, Ravenea latisecta, was found within four protected areas in the Andasibe-Mantadia region of Madagascar, according to a recent study. “Andasibe–Mantadia is one of Madagascar’s best-explored botanical regions, and Ravenea latisecta […]

Cheap coffee is killing Vietnam’s priceless tropical forests (commentary)
Vietnam is now the world’s largest producer of robusta, the bitter, sturdy bean behind instant coffee, supermarket blends, and the overall global appetite for cheap caffeine. But behind its meteoric rise to No. 2 coffee producer in the world lies a story the industry has tried very hard to hide: forests are disappearing, wildlife is […]

We could soon be able to track changes in Australia’s forests in near-real time – using satellites
Collecting data from sensors in remote woodlands has long required arduous treks. What if sensors could transmit data in real time?

If you have an opportunity to visit a freshly-burned forest, look for pyrophilic beetles (e.g., certain species in Sericoda, Melanophila, Monochamus) and flies (Microsania). Some have specialized antennae for detecting smoke, others use infrared-sensing areas on abdomen or thorax to locate hot spots. #fire #smoke #weather #canada #beetles #coleoptera #insects #flies #trees #forests
