»The new Unix, called OSF I, has been delayed considerably, and its user-interface is called OSF/Motif, which is in direct conflict with AT&T's Unix interface called Open Look.«
Found in an article about the state of Unix in "Your Computer", issue June 1990.

«How to Write a Computer Manual» found by accident on one of my many wanderings through the internet. The half-title says “Jonathan Price and the staff of the User Education Group in the Apple II Division of Apple Computer, Inc.” The book was released in 1984. #vintagecomputing #retrocomputing

»Friends who use Unix tell me that it is a much more ›interactive‹ way of communicating with a computer, and thus much more appropriate to the PC era than, say, IBM JCL was. (I realise that ›JCL‹ is an unknown term – church elders and other geriatric types wiil be happy to explain it, and happy that you asked them.)«

»DOS already represents a foretaste of hell to many ordinary computer users, so they will probably have no difficulty restraining their enthusiasm for something which is two orders of magnitude more complicated than DOS.«
Found in a column/rant on Unix in "Your Computer" issue June 1990. #vintagecomputing

Home automation for sure is as old as microcomputers and home computers are.

"Vielfädige Architekturen" – Es dauerte ein paar Takte, ehe ich dahinter kam, dass es um Multithreading geht. Das Buch ist von 1993, da hat man auch in der Informatik noch allerlei eingedeutscht. #vintagecomputing

Bycatch on my recent tour by car throughout Bavaria: a Sun Ultra 1 workstation. It's probably in a non repairable state, but anyway very eye candy just sitting in the shelf. The Ultra 1 was the very first Sun workstation with a 64-bit SPARC processor (UltraSPARC, sun4u Architecture), market introduction November 1995. #vintagecomputing

Somebody built a searchable and browsable BYTE magazine archive with all single pages on one single web page. I think, this is a very nice way of visualising a magazine archive. Enjoy: #vintagecomputing

"Programming SCI Clusters Using Parallel CORBA Objects"
That's the title of one of the papers in the book "SCI: Scalable Coherent Interface" and pretty much everything in this title is vintage. #vintagecomputing #hpc

Somehow by accident I adopted a pet project for some long and cold winter evenings from @…. First, case and keyboard will need some attention. And yes, it came together with a (working) power supply, joysticks, a few books and a big cardboard box full of floppy disks. #vintagecomputing

Remember the Commodore Amiga A500 I've got from @… recently? After carefully checking all the power supply voltages a few days ago, today I tried a first power-on. And well … it could have been worse 🙂 Looks like it's worth to invest more time on restauration. #vintagecomputing
