Dieses Jahr habe ich keinen #Winterkopfsalat. Der wuchs letztes Jahr nicht wirklich viel vor dem #Winter und verlor dann durch den Frost #Blätter. Die

Grüne Laubblätter, die stark mit Schnee bedeckt sind, wobei einzelne Eiszapfen an ihnen hängen. Der Schnee belastet die Blätter, sodass sie nach unten hängen. Im Hintergrund sind weitere verschneite Pflanzen erkennbar, die das winterliche Bild vervollständigen.

There are three kinds of #winter days:
1. Days when the heat pump can handle both floor heating and domestic hot water heating.
2. Days when I let it initially heat DHW in the morning, then switch to using an electric heating element, while the heat pump focuses on floor heating.
3. Days when I use electric DHW heating entirely, and let the heat pump start running floor heating from early morning hours.

Good Morning #Canada
Tomorrow one of Canada’s largest winter events kicks off in Ottawa. #Winterlude2026 runs from January 30th to February 16th, and may be considered in the top 2 winter festivals in Canada. Somewhere to the east, Bonhomme looks on dismissively.
A million plus attendees are expected to attend, assisted and pointed in the right direction by several hundred volunteers. The full 7.8 km length of the Rideau Canal Skateway, the equivalent of 90 ice rinks, is open for skating. The festival's mascots, the Ice Hogs family of Mama, Papa, Numa, and Numei, are opening their home in the Snowflake Kingdom and are ready to give hugs to all Winterlude visitors. Ice sculptors from around the world will compete in (checks notes) ice sculpting.

The oldest winter festival opened its ice gates to the public yesterday and runs to February 15th. The Quebec Winter Carnival was first held in 1894 but became an annual event starting in 1955. It's not the largest in the world but it's in the top 2, and record crowds are expected since most Canadians aren't interested in being interrogated at our southern border.
#Bonhomme is the generic term for a figure ( bonhomme de sucre , "sugar baby"; bonhomme de neige , "snowman"). The beloved character who represents the Quebec Winter Carnival lives a pampered life. He has the keys to the city, from the mayor in 1955, and has a new ice castle built for him every year. He also retires someplace cozy after the event and returns refreshed and ready for next year, unlike European festival snowmen who are burned at the close of activities to bring forth spring. Bonhomme has a better manager obviously.

My body detects low temperatures pretty fast. Even though I'm running #winter mode (gloves, hands inside sleeves, lots of glycerin-free hand cream), my hands look like they were hit by shrapnel.
I don't even switch to sandals on full metabolism now.

Es war einmal. Ein Bauer meinte, dass dieser Baum, es sind eigentlich 2 Birken, zu viele Blätter abwirft und hat die beiden Bäume rigoros umgehauen. Er mußte dann 2 neue pflanzen, die aber nie ans Wachstum gekommen sind. Sehr schade.

Good Morning #Canada
I'm heading out for an early appointment in Barrie and checking the weather to see if I'll have any challenges during my 25 minute travel time. I'll have to navigate through some snow - duh... it's Barrie - but poorly salted roads is also an issue. Ontario is facing a shortage of road salt due to an early onset of winter, higher than normal ice days early in the season and some supply chain issues with suppliers. Currently municipalities are trying to stretch their dwindling supply and mixing in more sand. That additional use of sand will result in higher cleaning costs in the spring but right now it's their only option. Suppliers believe that they'll solve the shortage problem in the next month but for now, get used to a bit more snow on your roads.
