Call for Papers: ICMS 2026 Panel, "The Imagined Woman" | H-Net
We welcome abstracts for an in-person session sponsored by Magistra at Kalamazoo ICMS 2026, entitled "The Imagined Woman: The Phantasmic 'Woman' in the Middle Ages."Inspired partially by Judith Butler’s discussion of phantasmic “gender” in Who’s Afraid of Gender (2024), this panel highlights the imagined “Woman” as she appears in medieval writing, and assesses the impacts of these abstractions on “real” women’s lives.

Guy next to me at the cafe I’m working out of this morning gets a call:
“… no we don’t live there anymore… no… no, we don’t live there anymore… are you serious?! [my ears perk up] Is this AI?… It is?!”
Spoke to him afterwards. Apparently “some energy company.” And it was an LLM on the other side. He said it sounded so real (a woman who gave him her name and sounded perfectly normal) until he asked it if it was AI when it responded “yes” and then restarted the script.

Great #DH2025 talk from @luanamcosta.bsky.social on using CLIP to analyse images of the 'New Woman'. Loved the idea of networks of queries, eg women working, voting, doing domestic activities, and querying the intersection of 'women working' and 'women in a public space'. Thus far CLIP was good for insights and exploration rather than definitive analysis - excellent for a …
