"Some designs of emojis are very different for the same codepoint, especially the ones depicting emotions/reactions. Examples coming to mind are 😨, 🔫. What are your thoughts on this?" - The (water) pistol 🔫 was originally a hand gun which looked a lot more real. In response to its frequent use in criminal or other unsavory contexts (e.g., as a threat), most platforms replaced it with the colorful plastic toy gun design in 2018. (In 2024, Elon Musk had it turned back into a realistic hand gun for the Twemoji design 🙄)
I'm torn. On the one hand, I don't think we can stay on top of all potential uses of emojis (or should even try to limit them) and people who want to use emojis for threats probably can still do so. On the other hand, I do find it rather hard to imagine that the green plastic 🔫 could be used as a threat... so... I guess good job, designers/tech firms? #emojis #linguistics #WorldEmojiDay

Deadline to file as a candidate for Clacton passed, and full list of candidates announced.
I heard a rumour that Farage failed to file in time, but that seems not to be true.
Twenty independents, Three candidates from the Monster Raving Loony party, a bunch of small parties, and the two fore-runners: Nigel Farage and Count Binface
Thirty Four candidates at an election is a British record.
One clear unity candidate. Every vote for the Count counts!

'I have heard it said, more than once, in research contexts, that an LLM can do some task “better than a graduate student.” That language makes me uncomfortable, because it is taking an extremely instrumental view of graduate students. Are graduate students in our groups and our laboratories and our universities to do work? Or are they here to learn? I very much hope the latter, or, if they are here to work, it is because that work is also critical to their learning' - David Hogg

"Those dynamics fall under what AV developers call “long-tail edge cases”: events so uncommon and so context-dependent that no amount of simulation can fully anticipate them."
Why the fsck are we letting them off with not doing the hard parts?
