The fractional quantum Hall effect (FQHE) is studied in the semiclassical limit in the framework of the Hofstadter model with a short-range interaction between fermions. In the mean-field approximation, the repulsion between fermions leads to a periodic potential. I got a new toy today. The WEP 882D soldering iron/hot air station. Tested it out this evening on an Xbox 360 controller PCB, one of a few I happen to have stashed in a toolbox in the shed. First attempt at taking off an analog stick didn't quite work as hoped. 2nd attempt I was able to remove it in one piece. Without flux, I might add. That's due Fri, along with 4 sets of hall effect sticks. Feeling fairly confident I'll have 4 Dual Senses modded soon.

A recent expert consensus found that non-standard reporting in MRS studies led to poor reproducibility. In order to address this, MRSinMRS guidelines were introduced; however, because of the disparate nomenclature and data formats, adoption has been slow. We describe the ``electrolubrication'' occurring in liquid mixtures confined between two charged surfaces. For a mixture of two liquids, the effective viscosity decreases markedly in the presence of a field. The origin of this reduction is field-induced phase separation, leading to the formation of two low-viscosity lubrication layers at the surfaces.
