If you reply to me and expect an answer, maybe don't call what I said a "bad faith argument".
What do you want me to say?
"Yes, I posted this to specifically upset you personally even though I didn't actually mean it!"
Or, you know, maybe if it makes you feel angry—figure out why.
Anger is an emotion that just tells you something might be wrong. You should take it as sign to think about why you have the feeling. It might be that there is something the matter with your beliefs or what you're doing.
Many of us are in @… and @… ’s situation here: plastics are collected for recycling, but few/none enter the recycling stream. In that situation:
- Robin’s response is the first and best one: use less.
- In addition, I’d advocate for (1) continuing to recycle what you can’t avoid using and (2) give that city gov endless headaches about their failure to recycle. Show there’s demand for recyclability, get whatever tiny fraction does get recycled out of the waste stream, •and• make headaches for people in positions of power for plastic failing to live up to that demand.
I would •not• just stop recycling. Don’t just give up. My 2¢.

The January wildfires that ripped through Los Angeles forced the state to spend billions in disaster aid
-- and delay tax filings for LA residents.
The cost of Medi-Cal,
the state-run health insurance program for low-income residents, ballooned to $6 billion more than anticipated.
Donald Trump’s on-again-off-again tariff policies rocked the stock market,
which California heavily relies on for tax revenue.
And the state lodged a flurry of lawsuits again…
My amazing niece flying solo. I took this still* from a video of her getting ATC clearance, taking off, and flying. Solo. She’s not yet 20.
I rly don’t have the words to describe my feelings as I watched the video. I cried like a baby—I can say that much.
Yesterday, I bought her a pair of Ray-Ban aviator shades for Xmas. Because she’s an aviator. ❤️
* I chose to share a pic w/ her face obscured for social media, but she’s as beautiful as she is brilliant.
I tried vibecoding again. Gave Opus 4.5 what I thought was a fairly hard assignment: generate a TypeScript compiler transform, using ts-patch, to let me mark functions with a magic decorator to make the compiler inline all calls to them.
It one-shot a basic implementation.
Getting to a higher-quality implementation required guidance from me – at times it had bad instincts – but when I gave guidance, it was competent at following it.
Overall, I'm spooked.

I am once again begging, begging everyone to hold these 3 thoughts in their head at once:
1. Plastics recycling is not very effective. It’s far, far better to not use plastic at all in the first place, and that failing, far better to reuse.
2. Plastics recycling is not worthless or pointless. Don’t just throw it all away because “iT dOEsn’T matTeR.” A miserable 5% reclaimed is still better than 0% reclaimed.
3. Plastics recycling is nonetheless part of a petrochemical greenwashing campaign, per @…’s post below. https://mastodon.social/@CelloMomOnCars/115650231600448649

“We gave them ample notice,” Hudgens said when asked about Alt5 Sigma’s claim it missed its
third-quarter deadline because of delays tied to its independent accountant.
Hudgens said his firm had conversations with possible successors
-- but he didn’t think Alt5 Sigma had engaged any of them.
As for when a company is late with filing a quarterly report, in general, he said,
“it usually indicates issues"
…everyone there was white. •Everyone•. This particular park would usually be more white than not, but…this was weird.
There’s officially a city prohibition on ICE setting foot in city parks, but who knows what that’s worth? Those bastards will do anything if they think they can get away with it. And they’ll grab people right off the streets if they’re falling behind quota for the day. Who’d risk that?
ICE had apparently succeeded turning the park into all-white world they dreamed of. It was…creepy.
