From Cascadia Journal
Washington State Standard reports on shiny new Airo trains that will be in service on the Amtrak Cascades line connecting Eugene, Portland, Seattle, Bellingham, and Vancouver BC on September 30. The new 300-passenger train sets will offer more comfort, a fancy cafe, better WiFi service, and restrooms with touchless controls. I'm thrilled about this – the Cascades line is one of my favorite ways to get around Cascadia, and it makes combining travel and work a b…

Primaries in Florida, Alaska and Wyoming held on Tuesday provided the latest view into how voters are feeling ahead of November’s US midterm elections.
One candidate aligned with the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) netted an extraordinary win
while another was defeated handily.
Donald Trump’s handpicked candidates received a mixed reception from voters.
In Alaska, voters chose their fighters for one of the year’s marquee US Senate races,

Visited FENIX yesterday. Rotterdam and about migration. The building is very impressive, I mean, not just nice, really worth visiting a few times. The photo exhibition is well presented and striking and moving at the same time. The other collections likewise. The hall with lots of suitcases, donated by migrants, include their stories. Hard to ignore! #FENIX

Just kidding of course, that's DDR2-800 memory.
Still a whopping 16 GiB of it, though, as an upgrade for my beautiful PowerMac G5 (Dual 2.0GHz).
Only problem: The Mac would only ever run the memory at PC2-3200U (aka 400 MHz), not the full 533MHz.
Someone else had luckily dumped the OpenFirmware ROM and I could determine that it doesn't handle such fast memory properly, it'll just fall back to 400 MHz.

This week on #ProFed: two new developments in the web client.
ProFed is not a microblogging system. The web client is optimized for professional social networking - which means some things work differently than in Mastodon or similar systems.
A splendid peer review:
"This is a remarkable result – in fact, I don’t believe it. However, I have examined the paper and can find no fault in the author's methods and results. Thus I believe it should be published so that others may assess it and the conclusions and/or repeat the experiment to see whether the same results are achieved."

50 years ago today, the grateful dead in hartford, the 1st post-hiatus mega-gig. vibes so savagely & comically bad that i hurt from lulzing at the newspaper coverage & scene reports. gigs like this were one of the big reasons the band stopped touring in late '74, what a bummer to see it at their 1st big gig back. only an audience tape, with many ugly clapalongs. summer ’76, show #7.
A unique moment. Having 7 packages in the repo now and they're all updated this week ;-).

it's not all perfect. The AI design had a good plan for copying and verifying all the data to the new place. But it didn't have anything to grab and new files written to the old place in the time between the initial copy and the cutover to the new place. A mistake I could imagine making myself. Glad I still have a role reviewing things.

Two years ago I got the hardware for a RAID-mirrored 12TB storage array for all my precious files, particularly my video and music archives. I then dragged my feet ever setting up the software for it so it's sat unused, spinning.
Now in about two days an AI has set up a custom operating system for it to run syncthing, sshfs, restic, and local mounts for me. (It could have done NFS or SMB but I don't need those.) There's a day or two more of testing and tuning but it's already proving useful.

For the second time in my life, I’m supporting a friend while they separate from an emotionally abusive partner. Both times, I didn’t even know there was abuse until the relationship ended. Here’s your PSA: Emotional abuse is just as damaging as physical abuse. And when a friend is suffering from it, they probably aren’t being noisy about it. They will quietly, slowly disappear from your life as their abuser convinces/cajoles/threatens them into abandoning who they are and what they love.
