There was nothing overtly malicious in Van de Ven’s challenge, but it was desperate, late, and had the kind of scissoring action that is specifically outlawed for this very reason. It should have been at least a yellow card, but the scissoring would have upgraded it to a red card. IFAB rules are clear that intent doesn’t matter when determining if a challenge should be disciplined. We now know the injury resulted in a fractured fibula and he will escape unpunished.
