Recent work has shown that a hexagonal grid qubit layout, with only three couplers per qubit, is sufficient to implement the surface code with performance comparable to that of a traditional four-coupler layout [McEwen et al., 2023]. Sometimes they come back: pulsations in A 0538-66 at 69 ms rediscovered with NICER
We report on NICER X-ray observations of the Be X-ray binary A 0538-66 located in the Large Magellanic Cloud. Fast pulsations (69 ms) in this source were discovered in 1980 during a bright outburst in which it reached a luminosity of ~8E38 erg/s, but were never reobserved since then. We clearly detected the pulsations at P=69.3055 +/- 0.0005 ms with a pulsed fraction of ~20% during a short time interval (~11 minutes) on 2023 January 9, when A 0538-66 had a luminosity of ~8E36 erg/s (0.3-10 keV)…

Good Morning #Canada
There is a little known reporting tool on the ##StatsCan website called Canada’s Quality of Life Hub. First proposed in 2021, and launched in 2023, it is a framework that gathers data and evidence to inform priority setting and guide decision-making in various policy areas, including the budgetary process. The Framework comprises five domains –prosperity, health, environment, society, and good governance – and two cross-cutting lenses: fairness and inclusion, and sustainability and resilience. Not enough Canadians have heard of it, and I suspect very few government policies are implemented before analyzing the impact on quality of life measurement by this tool. On a positive note, #StatsCan is looking for feedback on how to improve the hub.

We investigate the energy spectra of secondary cosmic ray particles associated with two distinct solar events: the magnetospheric effect (ME) of 5 November 2023 and ground-level enhancement (GLE 74) of 11 May 2024.
