I think the technology could be used responsibly for narrow use cases (e.g. writing code is a narrow use case), with the very important caveat that the training data needs to be properly licensed and authors properly compensated (unless they licensed stuff free for commercial use); as well as companies offering it being transparent and honest about what LLMs actually do.
Anyway, even if that’s the case (and that’s a big if and certainly not the case today) I have serious doubts concerning the long-term financial sustainability of companies like idk Anthropic.

I'm actually believing this, the main reason "AI" hype has become this big is tech people being impressed by it "writing code".
Then they were wrongly extrapolating capabilities to other fields (because "programming is super hard, harder than any other vocation, therefore 'AI' can do anything!!!1!"). To them, it clearly appears be god because they see themselves as gods—because they can write quicksort and linked lists or something.
Meanwhile, LLMs are only passable at generating code because it is laughably easy, mainly because programming languages and "best practices" are extremely verbose, repetitive and clunky; requiring endless boilerplate and infinite layer cakes to achieve even the most trivial things.
Because other people that don't care about that shit are so dependent on technology, it gets pushed to everyone without consent.
Kind of like a hubris ouroboros.

5. Online spaces, including social media, are especially important in connecting kids who feel isolated with others who are like them. This has long been especially true for kids who are any and every variety of queer, and especially especially for trans kids. These kids may have no avenues in their own lives to even •acknowledge• their identity, much less find •support• for it. Sometimes online community can save lives.
Awareness of this puts 3 and 4 in a harsh and unfavorable light. Eroding child privacy in favor of parent control is extremely dangerous.

3. Control is a key concept here. I don’t want corporations controlling kids, but I’m not keen on regulators doing that any more than absolutely necessary — or even parents! (And yes, I am a parent.) The goal of raising healthy kids should be for them to develop healthy autonomy.
True, we don’t let toddlers wander onto the freeway so they can learn for themselves why that’s bad — but if control has a place in caring for kids, it should be carefully circumscribed, and always pointed in the direction of autonomy. Beware authoritarian tendencies in the nurturing of children.

2. This danger / toxicity is not a necessary, intrinsic property of social media; it happened by •design•. Social interaction doesn’t suddenly become a new kind of psychologically toxic just because it happens on a screen. That happens when huge amounts of investment money pour into exploiting the human vulnerability of humans, weaponizing our own psychology to turn our social needs into a money pump, sucking us dry for profit. It’s a business model in the same category as casinos and diet pills.

(The underlying logic here is that LLMs embed biases, so you take advantage of that fact by prompting an LLM to take on a spectrum of different demographic biases that correspond to population demographics, then ask the LLM a polling question in the context of each of those demographically weighted biases.
So yeah, from my OP it might sound like they’re replacing polling with stabbing themselves in the face, but •actually• they’re juggling a bunch of knives and •then• stabbing themselves in the face.)

I mean that as a cynical jab, yes, but also an analysis: with rare exceptions, politicians don’t lead; people lead and politicians follow. That is both their actual job (in a democracy, anyway) and their practical survival reality.
People get so confused about this, waiting for politicians to come around or to take charge — when what we need to do in the long term is reshape social reality around them, and leave them scrambling to keep up with us.
