ON November 20th Pentagon officials traveled to Kyiv to present Volodymyr Zelensky with a much-ballyhooed peace proposal,
hatched mostly in secret in the preceding weeks.
A flurry of briefings and leaks has yet to clarify what the document actually represents:
a comprehensive plan,
a roadmap for further discussions
or a preliminary brainstorming sheet.
An American official in Kyiv nonetheless said it would be pursued “aggressively”,

Looking for a book on the rules of baseball in Mi'kmawi'simk (the language of the Mi'kmaq)? This one was written by a Capuchin missionary born and raised in France. In the words of one scholar, baseball was, at least in the 20th century, "the great Mi'kmaw passtime."

When it's observable that the very rich are steadily growing richer while the vast majority of people are growing poorer, it's obvious that the tax system is not neutral: it is actively redistributing wealth upwards. For the tax system to be neutral, it MUST tax the very rich much more. To do so is not redistributive, at least until it actively causes a net movement of wealth towards the poor: rather it is simply neutral.

Did you know that Interac, the Big Brother organization that knows if you're naughty or nice based on your shopping habits, tracks the busiest shopping day of the year? According to their data, Canadians are apparently getting smarter. A decade ago, December 23rd was traditionally the busiest day of the year for retailers based on how many debit and credit cards they swiped. About 5 years ago it began to shift to earlier in the month and in 2025 December 19th was forecasted to be the pinnacle of purchasing. Maybe we ran out of money 4 days earlier.
How prepared are you for #Christmas? Not including food prep, how organized are you for choosing gifts and getting them wrapped and ready? Please take part in our highly scientific survey below and please boost for a larger data sample.

#OTD in 1993 I recall I caught Big Sandy & His Fly-Rite Boys with the BarnStompers from Holland at an after hours warehouse party decorated with haybales at 21st an Harrison in SF. I recall the door man was a sketchy white supremacist redneck, who objected to letting in a person of color I came with.... The more things change, the more things do stay the same in this country.

Between February 12th and 15th, the U.S. sent 299 people—from countries such as Afghanistan, Cameroon, Somalia, and Iran—to Panama. On February 20th and 25th, the U.S. sent an additional 200 people, including 81 children, to Costa Rica. Soon afterward came third-country-deportation flights to Uzbekistan and El Salvador, where more than 250 non-Salvadoran immigrants were detained in the brutal Terrorism Confinement Center.

Both Quikscript and Shavian were essentially the results of a design competition,
sponsored--posthumously--by playwright George Bernard Shaw,
who laid out the terms in his will.
Shaw wanted someone to create an ideal phonetic alphabet for English that trumped Pitman shorthand.
British designer Ronald Kingsley Read, a finalist in the 1960s competition, designed both Quikscript and Shavian, the latter being named in Shaw's honor
