Analysis of logics with arithmetic
We present new results on finite satisfiability of logics with counting and arithmetic. This includes tight bounds on the complexity for two-variable logic with counting and cardinality comparisons between unary formulas, and also on logics with so-called local Presburger quantifiers. In the process, we provide simpler proofs of some key prior results on finite satisfiability and semi-linearity of the spectrum for these logics.

Many people asked for the context. This is for college students using what they already know about the order of arithmetic operations to start analyzing the structure of code. In the activity, they visual code structures using these kind of diagrams. The important thing here is thus not just subtraction; it’s this way of visualizing the relationships — and there already is a sight-centeric word, “visualize!” But I suspect a blind reader could also use these spatial relationships as a learning tool…if there were a good way of conveying the spatial relationships.

We derive explicit bounds for two general classes of $L$-functions, improving and generalizing earlier known estimates. These bounds can be used, for example, to apply Turing's method for determining the number of zeros up to a given height.
