"…give a formerly flat character some _single defining trait_, obsession, or problem to deal with. Just this one weird-yet-relatable thing. And suddenly, this character and the scenes they were in would come alive."

"Many Christians can’t identify with the word Christian anymore. No wonder the New Testament mentions 'Christian' just three times, as if reluctant to endorse a term that would become so easily exploited or distorted."
—Reflections editor Ray Waddle on the question "Is Christianity Losing its Religion?"

How to feel inadequate: TIL that Michael Holding — Whispering Death — preferred being a computer programmer to a professional cricketer, and worked as one well into his career. (This is from an article about the 1976 Oval match.) #Cricket

He was a fine athlete but had no interest in making sport his living. He still lived in his parents' house in Kingston, Jamaica. He was not yet a professional cricketer and didn't want to be one. He had a job as a government computer programmer, a post he would keep until 1981.

Crude AM detector demodulates 1kHz signal (blue) from 1MHz carrier (yellow). The output is not great quality, but the circuit is so basic I'm surprised it works. One diode, one resistor, and two capacitors. Similar to the early crystal radio sets, where the crystal served as a the diode.

An oscilloscope showing AM demodulation next to a signal generator (producing the signal) and a digital multi meter (not used for this). In the foreground is a breadboard circuit with probes and leads connected.
