The good thing about Linux is there's almost always some workaround, there must be 100 ways to play music in this environment. It's just comical than this simple task is so complicated.

Speaking as someone who grew up in the cassette and CD era: why in the hell would you want to make your recording sound worse? Tapes sucked. Their main advantages over CD were durability at rest when stepped on or dropped under the car seat, and (for about 15 years) recordability. The people who are convinced analog is superior aren't getting anything out of applying synthetic distortion to a digital file in ffmpeg, so it's not that.

phpc.social is now running on Mastodon 4.6.2, released ~7 hours ago. We're a bit over a week late upgrading to 4.6; sorry about that.
We're also now on a locally-compiled build of ffmpeg 8.1.2 to mitigate CVEs there. Video uploads should be back to working going forward.
In case anyone else needs to bo this and you're copying from the Mastodon Dockerfile, make sure you symlink to both ffmpeg and ffprobe from /usr/local/bin, otherwise the server won't pick it up.…
