The Probable Direct-Imaging Detection of the Stellar Companion to Betelgeuse: [oops, the paper will only go on ArXiv tonight and appear in ApJL on 24 July] -> Gemini North Discovers Long-Predicted Stellar Companion of Betelgeuse: #Betelgeuse, solving millennia-old mystery. The picture here is from the actual paper which has been sent to me ... compare it to the spiced-up version in the press release! The authors themselves say it's only a 1.5 sigma detection but because it fits the expectations for a 'Betel buddy' so well, they believe it. See skyweek.wordpress.com/2025/07/ for more discussion!

This black-and-white photograph depicts a small outdoor kiosk or stall. The kiosk is adorned with various plush toys, prominently featuring several Mickey Mouse dolls hanging at the top. Below the toys, there are shelves stocked with small items, possibly keychains or small trinkets. The front of the kiosk displays images of ice cream cones and bottles of beverages, suggesting that it might also sell refreshments. The setting appears to be a park or a fair, with trees and a fence v…

I think this tedious reviewer needs to see more "lush landscapes, epic struggles, pointed political allegories and delicious, disgusting monsters" in The Sandman ->

That Zohran Kwame Mamdani should be a serious contender for the leadership of America’s largest city is both a sign of the times and of his individual capabilities.
Polls show him within striking distance of the frontrunner Andrew Cuomo in what is now essentially a two-horse race, with Lander trailing a distant third.
Mamdani came to the US aged seven from Uganda where he was born to parents of Indian descent.

at the very end of tulip season I allowed myself to cut a bouquet. having it on my desk might have been a mistake - I got utterly and completely hypnotized by the way how the wind in the tree outside my window that is filtering the sunlight coming in made them look differently from split second to split second. so hard to look away. so many pictures taken. so many decisions to make. but now tulip season is truly over.
which one do you like better, and why?

closeup of a bouquet of wilting tulips in shades of light pink and dark yellow tending orange. some flowers are already more wilted than others, the whole thing unevenly lit from the upper left
the same view as in the previous image, just lit slightly differently with slightly different shadow patterns
