The environmental dependence of the circumgalactic medium in a high-resolution cosmological simulation

Abstract: There is increasing evidence from observations that the circumgalactic medium (CGM) of galaxies depends on the large-scale structure in which they are embedded. When probing the CGM in absorption using quasar sightlines, studies find an enhanced sky coverage in the CGM of galaxies in overdensities compared to galaxies in isolation. However, the exact reason for this environmental dependence is still unclear. In this work we aim to model for the first time the influence of the large-scale structure on the cool and warm ($T\sim10^{4-5}$ K) gas phases of the CGM. We use a high-resolution ($m_{gas}\approx 4.5\times 10^4$ M$_{\odot}$, $m_{dm}\approx 2.4\times 10^5$ M$_{\odot}$) cosmological simulation based on the EAGLE model of galaxy formation. We select all galaxies at $z=0$ with stellar mass $M_*>10^8$ M$_\odot$ and split them into galaxies in overdensities (group galaxies) and galaxies in isolation using a Friends-of-Friends algorithm. For these two samples, we investigate how the large-scale structure influences the physical properties of the CGM and the measured covering fractions of the cool and warm gas phases. When the two samples of group and isolated galaxies are matched in stellar mass, halo mass, and we use only central galaxies, we do not find any significant difference in the physical properties of the CGM and the measured covering fractions. However, when satellite galaxies are included, we recover the observational trends in the difference of covering fractions with the environment. The difficulty of recovering the observational trends shows the complexity of capturing the multiphase CGM in simulations. However, since our results concerning the admixture of satellites are independent of the employed subgrid physics, this work shows that central galaxies and satellites need to be disentangled in observational studies to clearly discern the role of the environment on the CGM.

AI-based single-shot structured-light depth reconstruction for real-time laparoscopic surgical guidance

https://arxiv.org/abs/2608.05109 https://arxiv.org/pdf/2608.05109 https://arxiv.org/html/2608.05109

Abstract: Significance. Accurate intraoperative depth perception is important for autonomous and semi-autonomous robotic laparoscopic surgery. Conventional fringe projection profilometry can achieve millimeter-scale accuracy but often requires multi-shot acquisition, digital-micromirror-device projection, and projector-camera synchronization, complicating integration into compact laparoscopic systems.
Aim. To develop a synchronization-free, single-shot depth-sensing platform using a passive LED-illuminated binary mask and a VQ-VAE prior with a custom U-Net depth head.
Approach. A compact projection module was coupled to one channel of a dual-channel laparoscope, while the second channel imaged the fringe-illuminated target. A Zivid 3D camera acquired reference depth for 722 paired phantom images. Zivid depth maps were reprojected into the SSLE image frame for supervised training and evaluation. The VQ-VAE encoded each input into a discrete latent representation, and a latent-space U-Net predicted depth without a separate mask-prediction branch.
Results. Using a fixed train/validation/test split, the proposed model achieved an MAE of 3.70 mm, AbsRel of 0.0326, delta=1.1 accuracy of 0.962, and delta=1.1^2 accuracy of 0.970. It achieved lower MAE than the dual U-Net MaskNet DepthNet baseline and outperformed off-the-shelf monocular depth models in MAE, AbsRel, and threshold accuracy. The pipeline operated at 26.0 Hz over 301 consecutive frames on an NVIDIA A100 GPU.
Conclusions. The LED-illuminated binary-pattern platform with latent-space depth reconstruction enables synchronization-free, video-rate endoscopic depth estimation. Results demonstrate Zivid-referenced phantom reconstruction without an explicit segmentation stage, while emphasizing the importance of dataset size and SSLE-Zivid calibration accuracy.

Abstract: Deepfakes, especially face-swapping attacks, pose significant challenges to authenticity, security, and ethics across science, engineering, and society. While most existing detection/tracing approaches operate post hoc, proactive defenses that aim to intervene before deepfake generation remain limited in terms of real-world effectiveness. In this paper, we present PhantomSeal, the first proactive defense to simultaneously protect both the identity and the context of users' images from being used in face-swapping attacks, while supporting forensic tracing. We present a novel cloaking technique that embeds a selected identity as a stealthy identifier. This mechanism steers the deepfake generation process toward producing content that resembles the chosen cloak identity, thereby preventing successful face-swapping while enabling effective feature-based forensic analysis. The effectiveness and robustness of PhantomSeal is demonstrated in extensive experiments across different face-swapping architectures and models. For example, it reduces the attack success rate of SimSwap, an advanced deepfake model, to 0.30%, and correctly identifies 97.97% of manipulated content. Abstract: Purpose In advanced computational MRI techniques, acquisition and reconstruction techniques are jointly designed. For reproducibility, it is therefore important to provide an open implementation of both. At the same time, any use in a clinical environment usually requires a close integration with the MRI scanner. Ensuring long-time reproducibility and maintenance then poses additional challenges. In this work, we aim to provide a fully integrated open-source framework that can meet these demands.
Methods A software framework to develop pulse sequences is added to the BART toolbox. In addition, a vendor-specific driver sequence is developed that can be used to run the sequence on a clinical MRI scanner enabling online adjustment of all relevant sequence parameters. Using the Pulseq format, the exact same sequence can also be reproduced offline. As proof-of-concept, quantitative MRI methods for T1 and joint water/fat R2*, B0 mapping using radial FLASH and model-based reconstruction are implemented in the proposed framework. Consistency between online and offline acquisition is validated in phantom and in vivo experiments.
Results Quantitative MRI methods consisting of acquisition and reconstruction were successfully implemented in BART. Acquisition parameters and FOV can be adapted online on a clinical MRI system. Quantitative parameter maps from model-based reconstruction agree for online and offline regenerated Pulseq acquisitions.
Conclusion This work enables reproducibility of advanced computational MRI methods within a comprehensive end-to-end open-source framework.

New on #blog: "How hard is it to get a jobserver client right?"
"""
In November 2025, I’ve started working on #steve, the #jobserver for #Gentoo. I wrote about it already, in the “One jobserver to rule them all” post. Back then, my main focus was on the motivation for a system-wide jobserver, and the technical details of getting it working. I have also mentioned a few client bugs we’ve discovered along the way.
Since then, we’ve found a few more bugs, as well as problematic design patterns. I think they’re kind of interesting, so I’ve decided to dedicate this post specifically to them. As a disclaimer, my aim is not to pick on specific projects; I’m bringing them up as real examples of what we’ve hit, and how that impacts jobserver operation.
