Halpern Acceleration of the Inexact Proximal Point Method of Rockafellar

Abstract: This paper investigates a Halpern acceleration of the inexact proximal point method for solving maximal monotone inclusion problems in Hilbert spaces. The proposed Halpern inexact proximal point method (HiPPM) is shown to be globally convergent, and a unified framework is developed to analyze its worst-case convergence rate. Under mild summability conditions on the inexactness tolerances, HiPPM achieves an $\mathcal{O}(1/k^{2})$ rate in terms of the squared fixed-point residual. Furthermore, under additional mild condition, the method retains a fast linear convergence rate. Building upon this framework, we further extend the acceleration technique to constrained convex optimization through the augmented Lagrangian formulation. In analogy to Rockafellar's classical results, the resulting accelerated inexact augmented Lagrangian method inherits the convergence rate and complexity guarantees of HiPPM. The analysis thus provides a unified theoretical foundation for accelerated inexact proximal algorithms and their augmented Lagrangian extensions.

Yesterday I was chatting with a potential client, an engineering lead at one of those huge tech companies you’ve heard about. He asked “How do you feel about using LLMs for programming?”
Folks, I did not hold back, I did not try to butter up a lead, I was point blank about my strong distaste for the idea. I made some analogy about putting F1 drivers in Teslas and expecting them to like self driving.
So anyway he is excited to work with me. Just one data point, but thought you sho…

Abstract: The definition of a reference frame in General Relativity is achieved through the construction of a congruence of time-like world-lines. In this framework, splitting techniques enable us to express physical phenomena in analogy with Special Relativity, thereby realizing the local description in terms of Minkowski spacetime in accordance with the equivalence principle. This approach holds promise for elucidating the foundational principles of relativistic gravitational physics, as it illustrates how its 4-dimensional mathematical model manifests in practical measurement processes conducted in both space and time. In addition, we show how, within this framework, the Newtonian gravitational force naturally emerges as an effect of the non-geodesic path of the reference frame.

Abstract: This short note comments on \citet{Aerts2024Origin}, which proposes that ranked word frequencies in texts should be read through the lens of Bose--Einstein (BE) statistics and even used to illuminate the origin of quantum statistics in physics. The core message here is modest: the paper offers an interesting analogy and an eye-catching fit, but several key steps mix physical claims with definitions and curve-fitting choices. We highlight three such points: (i) a normalization issue that is presented as "bosonic enhancement", (ii) an identification of rank with energy that makes the BE fit only weakly diagnostic of an underlying mechanism, and (iii) a baseline comparison that is too weak to support an ontological conclusion. We also briefly flag a few additional concerns (interpretation drift, parameter semantics, and reproducibility).

Abstract: This letter introduces the novel concept of Painlev\'e solitons -- waves arising from the interaction between Painlev\'e waves and solitons in integrable systems. Painlev\'e solitons may also be viewed as solitons propagating against a Painlev\'e wave background, in analogy with the established notion of elliptic solitons, which refer to solitons on an elliptic wave background. By employing a novel symmetry decomposition method aided by nonlocal residual symmetries, we explicitly construct (extended) Painlev\'e II solitons for the Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) equation and (extended) Painlev\'e IV solitons for the Boussinesq equation.

Fortunately, incapacitating "AI" is fairly easy. It's all still just computers & code.
I mean, I like the analogy but it has a limit. AI is like 2-digit years: a bad idea that many people always knew was shoddy but no one fixed until everyone did because they had to.
I don't know what the equivalent might be for "AI" but I expect that sometime next year we'll start seeing BIG stumbles that result in orgs running away (individually) from it.
