A small aside, during my vacation I finally started on writing a Metal backend for SwiftTerm.
It has a few missing features, so not worth comparing performance yet, but it is feeling great:

tech nerdery
I mean this: if every receiver just connected to its source when it was ready, and we hadn't made short-timeout stateful firewalls everywhere, we'd have to deploy SO MANY fewer weird one-off services just to receive something.
Instead we have to provision certificates and public facing hostnames to get communication going. Backend development is so much more complex and less robust because of it.

Since migrating away from big tech platforms (including Google Drive) I have been using Libreoffice for my writing and presentations.
I often get asked why I do not use OnlyOffice since it looks so much better (especially the web client). Two answers:
- The presentation tools of OnlyOffice are too barebones
But more importantly:
OnlyOffice is a company that seems to be controlled by a Russian guy who invests a lot of time to hide the fact that OnlyOffice is Russian (see…
PSA: We had some image loading issues since yesterday on datasci.social, soon to be resolved by itself. Thx for understanding.
Reason: Due to migrating to a more stable provider: An additional cache for images was added that also stores the data in an efficient manner, but due to the large initial load some of its requests are timing out to the backend. We are increasing the timeouts, and also manually pushing data into it so it has data before the initial request.

@… Do you think this is an issue? I have no idea how people test React components at all nowadays.
Personally I prefer to write browser tests with a fake backend implementation (running in the client; no HTTP calls), but this might be controversial.

Even for small projects, while it might work, I wouldn't want the context switching personally. Especially if the backend uses some weird templating language for generating the html snippets. I'd much rather use a fullstack framework like #SvelteKit where your endpoint is just a load function that returns some data (automatically serialized and made available to the page script), or create a proper API in another language that returns some JSON.

I really don't understand the enthusiasm around #htmx. Why would anyone want to put html and css classes in their backend code? It probably works for tiny projects but can you imagine a large company doing that? Oh the frontend team needs this button bigger? Better ask the backend team to change their API! That kind of coupling seems very unergonomic. Just my two cents... #webdev #html #backend
