I discovered inter networking in late 1984 (or was it early 1985 ?), thanks to my Alma Mater getting an IBM 4381 connected to EARN (European Academic and Research Network).
Some students quickly discovered that EARN and Bitnet interconnections allowed us to send terminal to terminal messages to US students which were also on IBM systems but we were unable to do so with VAX/VMS users.
