We're reading this terrific biography for my grad seminar this week. Hamon brings novel insight to Riel, a figure about whom so much has been written, in the process proposing a provocative reading of Canada's origins. I can't wait for our discussion.

The kids enjoy it when we take them by the hospital where they were born, which has since been renovated beyond recognition. We point more or less at the spot in the air where it all it went down - they were both born on the same side of the hall, within a room or two of each other - and we collectively try to conjure a ward from empty space.

Out in the woods tonight. It's really cold (-20c), but achingly beautiful too. The picture doesn't get anywhere close to doing it justice.
