RE: phpc.social/@syntaxseed/115855
I have such conflicted thoughts on this.
What happened? Gross. It's very much a harm as a systemic effect of "AI"
But also _open source industry_ is in fact a thing I think has been deeply destructive and somewhat replaced the collectivist work done before. We could go back to that. That was good stuff.
But TailwindCSS is super popular.
I also think it's a bad technology, meant to undermine the foundations and design of CSS, leading us to technically worse places.
Also the business? It is selling themes and components.
That's a really hard business to be in. The time to buy a license comes in a project's lifecycle too early, so people avoid it. It's a weird business. Not one I think people should plan to have work.

This has allowed me to make clear something that's been at the back of my mind. Something that is at the heart of so much blind stupidity in big tech.
It's the assumption that we will change one thing and all else will be the same.
In this case, we will fire lots and lots of employees all over the world and we will make lots of profit. We're smart enough to make the AI, and we're dumb enough to think that there will only be one consequence. 1/n

They argue that genAI won’t produce sufficient revenue from consumers to pay back the current investment frenzy. I mean, they’re right, it won’t, but that’s not what the investors are buying. They’re buying the promise, not of more revenue, but of higher profits that happen when tens of millions of knowledge workers are replaced by (presumably-cheaper) genAI. ¶

It’s funny how many people have no idea how to buy used stuff for non-inflated prices.
Here’s some tips to get you started (for eBay):
1. The first thing about eBay is that most things listed as “buy now” are overpriced—otherwise someone else would have bought it already. You have to always look at sold listings to see what things are actually worth.
2. Use saved searches specifically limited in price and distance.
3. Always sort by newly listed for “Buy Now” and ending soonest for auctions.
4. Look for older buy now listings and make offers. The older the listing the lower you offer. Some tools like flippah.net show you the listed date directly without having to dig deep on the eBay website. You can make offers even when the button isn’t there, just send a message.
5. Never buy anything from sellers with 0 feedback or less than a 98% or so rating.
A general thing to remember is that unless you buy new stuff or see a listing from a store (some categories have a lot of stores, e.g. cameras) you’re likely to deal directly with a private seller and a human being. Be polite and respectful but don’t be afraid to say no. Don’t make insulting offers.

I don't think I'm ever going to enjoy gifts.
I can get why people would give them to children. After all, children don't have their own budget. However, I'm talking about occasional gifts, not a new toy every second week, because "we must outcompete the other grandparents". But to adults?
Once I've heard that you should gift people with what they won't buy themselves. Well, that's won't work for me. I'm a minimalist. If I don't need something, I don't want to have it. Unnecessary junk is only emotional burden to me.
I can get why you'd enjoy something handmade. But something people bought? If I need something, I can buy it myself, when I need it. And I definitely don't need people to prove to me that they never cared to learn who I am, and just buy whatever they like or whatever is "fashionable"; which usually means exactly the opposite of what I'd prefer (i.e. something minimalistic). Or even worse, I don't need people manipulating me through gifts.
Sweets? Besides my diabetes, I don't really enjoy expensive shit that people generally buy because it's what's advertised. For the money they waste on it, I'd buy three times as much sweets I'd actually enjoy.
Gift cards? Oh yes, "you aren't supposed to give money, so let's just give the equivalent of money that's actually worth less than money". Actual money? And here we reach the true nonsense; we exchange the same amount of money, so it's just pointless gesture. Unless one of us gives less money…
What I'd really like, as a gift? Maybe that people would finally bother accepting me as who I am. The absolute minimum of caring that I hate consumerism, and not fueling it "for me".
