To get a stethoscope into Gaza you needed to buy a TV:
Resisting the blockade in Gaza with Mohammed Abu Matar from Tashkeel3D.
"I met Mohammad in 2018 while interning at a digital fabrication lab in Amman, Jordan. It was late afternoon, and the lab was almost deserted. Two men were playfully experimenting with the laser cutter, trying to figure out how it worked while sharing a moment of fun.
"Intrigued, I approached them to see if they needed any help figuring it out. They seemed to have navigated their way around the tool, so we started chatting.
"I couldn't help but stare at an orange plastic object in front of them. It had a central Y-shaped component with a transparent, flexible tube hanging from its tail, and a circular plastic piece attached to it. They handed me two rubber earbuds to fix on each end of the Y-shaped piece: it was a stethoscope, with some parts 3D-printed, and others bought and assembled.
"Mohammad and his friend were in transit in Amman awaiting a Canadian visa. Their team was invited to attend a conference to showcase their work on manufacturing open-source medical hardware in Gaza. Unfortunately, they were denied a visa to Canada, and so they returned home."
“Why not just buy stethoscopes?” I asked. Mohammed explained that first of all, bringing stethoscopes into Gaza was often impossible because the Israeli occupation arbitrary restricts entry of aid claiming they are dual-use goods. Second, buying stethoscopes in large quantities wasn’t feasible as they are expensive.
For emphasis, the Israeli occupation bans many essential and life-saving medical equipment under the dual-use goods claim. These restrictions began with the land-air-sea blockade on Gaza in 2007.

How much money do you think the United States has spent since 1945 on the Cold War? Sometimes they ask this question then from the back of the audience comes in answer ‘billions and billions‘. A huge underestimate – billions and billions. The amount of money that the United States has spent on the Cold War since 1945 is approximately 10 trillion dollars. Trillion, that’s the big one with the ‘T’. What could you buy with 10 trillion dollars? The answer is: You could buy everything…

I'm not the type to use cash. Nevertheless, I've carried some "emergency" cash for a long time now. "Emergency" was roughly defined as "having nothing else, buying a train ticket home".
Lately, I've realized that the amount I'm carrying didn't change since middle school. Therefore, it doesn't account that 1) train tickets are much more expensive these days, and 2) I'm moving much longer distances. I definitely won't be able to buy a ticket for that money.

I needed to buy a toothbrush and I always get the bamboo ones. There was one for adults and one for children, both for the same price.
Toothbrush for children: Has raccoon on it.
Toothbrush for adults: No raccoon.
Guess which one I bought.

Just ordered desktops for me & SWMBO. My 2015 iMac has a deep flakeout that involves random panics at idle (and reliably whenever I try to reinstall the system or deep scan the disk, which SMART insists is fine.) Her 2013 iMac is just old.
We’re lucky enough that it’s something we can do, but it was still painful to click that order button. On the bright side, this is likely to be the last time I buy a display (no more 27” iMacs. ☹️) & mine may well be the last personal comput…

Mnuchin’s plan to buy TikTok has some insiders bewildered

So... Yesterday I went out with the intention of buying a record player. I came home with one and 4 records to start my meager collection. I just set it up and it sounds great (although I have very little to go on). The first record I had to buy and therefore play was, of course Kind Of Blue by Miles Davis.
Once I get my own place set up, I'll be able to enjoy this and Jazz Geek out.

Oh, and I’m getting hearing aids next week. I’ve talked to friends with them, some are noobs. The common thread is, it’s a learning process (duh) and your brain gets a remedial course is how to hear.
