When we saw the eclipse in 2017, we swore we‘d travel to catch the next one. Maine sounds like a fun place to visit!
However, the timing of things turned this into a big travel year for other reasons and we just couldn’t cram in one more trip. Really bummed I’m going to miss it. The next one in North America is decades away. Catch this one if at all possible!

Some hard facts for the eco-techno-optimists from the always well researched Low Tech magazine.
"Unfortunately, the planned switch to low-carbon energy sources and the electrification of heating and transport technologies will not decrease our dependency on the steel industry – on the contrary."

The high steel intensity of low carbon power sources confronts us with a so-called “catch-22”, a situation in which there seems to be no escape from a problem no matter what we do. We need much more steel if we replace thermal power plants with renewable ones. Because there is not enough steel scrap available, we can only produce that extra steel from iron ore in blast furnaces burning fossil fuels. To address climate change, we need to build low-carbon sources quickly and in great numbers. How…
The continuous growth of the steel output – the increasing steel intensity of human society – makes sustainable steel production impossible. No technology can change that because it’s not a technological problem. Like forestry can only be sustainable if the wood demand does not exceed the wood supply, steel is sustainable or not depending on the balance between (scrap) supply and (steel) demand. We may not be able to escape the Iron Age, but we have an option to escape the catch-22 that inextri…

"""
The case of One Laptop per Child shows us why it is dangerous to ignore the origins of charisma: one risks being perpetually entranced by the newest charismatic technology. This is not to say that cultural change with a technology-centric project is impossible. Still, even more realistic reforms grounded in the realities of their intended beneficiaries sometimes have difficulty gaining broad popular support outside the school unless they add a charismatic gloss of rapid, revolutionary change.
This charismatic pressure can put even open-eyed reformers in a catch-22. They must promise dramatic results to gain the social and financial support for reforms, and then they must either admit to not achieving their goals or pretend that they did achieve them. Either way, funders will declare that the project is finished and withdraw financial support, and then researchers and other observers will begin to note the discrepancies between reformers’ promises and their own observations. Thus, projects that rely on charismatic technologies are often short lived; their resources are cut off before charisma recedes into the background and before the technology becomes part of everyday classroom experience. This catch-22 has dogged efforts for educational reform, development, and cultural change — especially those funded through grants or other short-term funding — for well over a century. As the technology community moves on to the next charismatic device without learning from its failures, this will continue to hamper the possibility of real, if incremental, change.
[…] After all, charisma is ultimately a conservative social force. Even when charismatic technologies promise to quickly and painlessly transform our lives for the better, they appeal precisely because they echo existing stereotypes, confirm the value of existing power relations, and reinforce existing ideologies. Meanwhile, they may divert attention and resources from more complicated, expensive, or politically charged reforms that do not promise a quick fix and are thus less charismatic.

One option is to externalize these choices from the image generator. You can imagine adding a "race bit" to the input that says "if you have a character make it race X" and then roll some race dice on input. This is what it feels like Google has done.
Another option is to give the choice to a better equipped AI. Dall-E does this by having GPT rewrite prompts. This still isn't good at distribution, but can use the LLM's superior knowledge to catch things like…

A Dell P2422H sitting on the corner of the electronics workbench with a small RGB keyboard and trackball beneath it. Beside those is a small AMD NUC computer. Biden crossed a new threshold this last week, notching his 175th confirmed judge and eclipsing former President Barack Obama’s numbers under his first term.
It reflects Democrats’ focus on refilling the federal judicial ranks, but they’re scrambling to catch the record set by former President Donald Trump.
And election years only get harder.
Typically reliable judicial votes like Sens. Jon Tester (D-Mont.) and Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio) will be unwilling to make any risky move…
