Cloud cos should create a joint open source maintainers group, well funded, experienced developers etc. ready to hire long term maintainers
Their remit should be to fork every project who goes source available or closed source at the last FOSS commit and maintain it properly as a going concern.
This will either stop this shit or ensure ongoing stewardship.
Should be trivial budget wise given what they make from these code bases.

It really bugs me that the main place for 'communities' is closed source or proprietary platforms such as Facebook, Reddit, Discord etc. What if I don't want (or don't have) any of those because of their dirty dealings (looking at you Reddit!)?
I feel this is the reason that people so desperately want to federate with Threads: so they can get all the mainstream content without giving away their ideals.
Where can I find good Trombone community other than the abov…

Some proprietary software lobbyists are trying to spin the xz story as an "anti open source" story, and I see demands like "you shall only use opensource software if you have a contract with someone guaranteeing support and security". I'd be curious: Can I see the contract those people have with Microsoft or whatever company you never heard of that wrote the firmware in their wifi card that guarantees the same for the closed source software they're using?

Hmm, not sure what to think about that description. I see the appeal but do we want to stretch “open source” all the way to include closed implementations of open protocols?

An open source project that let people view tweets without going to Twitter.com has shut down, as Elon Musk's changes seem to have closed off all possible ways to access the Twitter network without a user account.
#Nitter provided an alternative front-end to Twitter but has been struggling for months. Nitter.net, the official Nitter instance, went down a few weeks ago.

I remember that back in the day, I've hit a #Python package that would attempt to be closed-source by shipping only a .pyc file… for Python 2.5. As you can imagine, this didn't work out — though it was a bit of a hassle to get a working decompiler back then (we didn't have a Python version older than 2.7.x in #Gentoo at the time). However, I don't really remember what it was and how it worked out in the end.

I suppose everyone and their grandmother is now using the xz/sshd exploit to further their own agenda, so I am going to take this opportunity to further mine as well.
1. #Autotools are a bad build system. If configure scripts are completely unreadable, there should be no surprise that people won't notice obfuscated malicious code in there, provided that everything else is obfuscated by design.
2. Static linking and vendoring is bad. Do you know why the prompt #security response was possible? Because we just had to revert to older liblzma. We didn't have to check, patch and re-release hundreds of projects. It wouldn't be this easy with #RustLang and cargo.
3. You can blame #OpenSource for being underfunded and open to abuse in core system packages. However, no IT project can be resilient to a sufficiently powerful bad actor, and that it happened to xz is just an incident. Corporate projects aren't resilient to it, neither is proprietary, closed-source software.
So, embrace #Meson, embrace dynamic linking, embrace distribution packaging and donate to open source developers.
#Gentoo
