The fact that I have such a strong food phobia that I don't feel myself capable to work at a supermarket during the weekend because I would have to manipulate some cheese in a packaging is terrible. Come on all the easy weekend jobs require at some point to be in proximity or contact with cheese.
Except security guard, but then I have to be in contact with humans which is just slightly less terrible

Abstract: We develop a generalized contact Hamiltonian framework by extending canonical contact Hamiltonian mechanics to nonlinear dissipative systems through the replacement of the classical linear contact potential with a smooth nonlinear contact potential. The proposed formulation establishes a generalized energy dissipation law together with a structural characterization of admissible contact-induced damping, introducing effective contact dissipation as an intrinsic geometric measure of adaptive dissipation. As an application, a generalized contact Duffing oscillator is derived, in which dissipation emerges intrinsically from the contact geometry rather than being introduced phenomenologically. Numerical investigations of the generalized contact Duffing oscillator demonstrate that nonlinear contact geometry governs the effective dissipation and produces significant changes in the phase-space structure, energy decay, dynamical stability, and long-term nonlinear behavior. The proposed theory therefore provides a systematic geometric framework for constructing and analyzing nonlinear dissipative Hamiltonian systems within contact Hamiltonian mechanics.

Took my son to lunch today for his birthday. Just the two of us. It's kind of a fraught situation considering the circumstances. We are caring for the wee one in our home while he and his ex-partner are currently only allowed supervised contact visits.

Damn; I went to debug why Model B wouldn't write to floppies and...it worked. Yesterday when I got a scope on the write-data line on the drive end it didn't budge at all. By the time I'd got the beeb open today, moved the keyboard and stuffed a scope probe on the gate between the 8271 and the drive it all got nice friendly data there. Hmm.
Took the IC80 out, gave the legs a rub and a bit of contact cleaner, and hmm ok.

Two small new prints from this afternoon, this time not Kallitype but contact printing on silver chloride FB paper, developed with Adox MCC. The increase in depth and detail is just wonderful and the feel of the final results an instant throwback to my early darkroom adventures ~40 years ago... 😍
The pictures are of two of my favorite places in recent years. Larger prints will be available for purchase in September.

I am saddened by the fact that people seem to think that having their email delivered to someone who does not already know them is some sort of right.
Even mail system operators.
So when the Big Pink T decides to interpret German law broadly to require mail systems offering them email to have a discoverable website with an “Impressum” (Imprint) identifying the responsible party with usable contact info, that is entirely within their rights, even if they are legally incorrect.…

I’m not sharing this to indicate I know any famous people - because that’s entirely boring and literally makes no difference to anything anyway - but it’s psychologically interesting to me that those I’ve known who *became* famous all disappeared / became largely unresponsive after the change from then on, whereas those befriended already in that condition remain in contact and friends to this day.

Yesterday, I met someone (and their family) that I am in contact with via social media since 6years for the first time.
It's always a bit exciting when you don't know any personal details - sometimes not even the voice. I always try to suppress any assumptions/expectations to avoid unnecessary disappointments.
But the few times I met ppl from social media, it was always a good happening. There are really so many good people out there.

That PC whose fan dropped off the other week has been bodged into working. I used a couple of plastic strips and motherboard mounts to hold them to the board with screws in the right place for the heatsink; but I found it needed more pressure on the fan for it to make good contact with the CPU, especially at the top; so outcomes the wood. This is working reasonably well; although the wedge positioning is a bit touchy to get it right.

I've been asked a bunch of times to write up my "QSO in a Kilo(gram)" ham radio kit that is light enough to just drop into my computer bag and have with me to deploy at a moment's notice.
I kept not writing it up because I haven't taken all the opportunities to make it even lighter and wanted to try just one more thing — which was silly. I can always make another blog post, or edit this one.

QSO in a Kilo(gram)
I carry an HF ham radio with me most places I go, plus all the equipment that I need to make a contact (a “QSO”). I gave myself a budget of 1 kilogram, so that I’d come up with something that was comfortable to carry with me. I want to be able to operate, including “activating” parks for POTA, spontaneously. I’m primarily a low-power (“QRP”) Morse code (“CW”) operator. This made my task easier.
