Here's the other bike light I added for the (now-dark) rides home. I found an LED strip, I do not remember where i got it, but I think it was an under counter light I tore apart?
Anyway, I 3D printed a little enclosure for it, added some rubber o-rings, velcro strapped onto the downtube, and plugged into a USB power bank.
It's pretty damn bright! I can slide it up a few centimeters to plug in the ebike when it needs charging, and it's simple to remove.

Another month, another column! Can you tell when someone loaned me an ebike and when I got my own and started to ride to work?
I went into 2025 hoping to do 1,000 miles, realized half way through I could probably hit 1,200 miles and now with 3 months left I'm over 1,400 miles.

eBike Nerdery
If anyone in the local area wants a TSDZ2B to retrofit a bike, I'd let it go kinda cheap. A lighter rider who just wants to putter a bit would do fine with it, I'm just heavy and ride in all kinds of subpar conditions.

Hm, $450 for a bike whose manufacturer is about to enter bankruptcy (in no small part due to recalls), with broken rear wheel & motor, and almost 7,000 miles on it? Good luck with that.

I meant to tell Nathan of the Ebike Library that the TSDZ8 firmware upgrade went well, and if anything the max power seems higher. But, Discord is a UI tire fire and I couldn't find the conversation, so I will put it here instead.
First thing I did was put the assist up to 5 and punched it, and saw (at least for a few seconds) a claimed assist of 1100W (and the bike really rabbited forward). The lower assist levels are quite pleasant.

"Our intro and then a question from @plactagonic:
Q1 Where are you posting from today?
Q2 What makes bikes fun for you?
Hi! I'm posting from the north coast of Scotland, near John O'Groats (which you may have heard of). I'm a lifelong cyclist, I don't even have a driver's license 😄
I just gave away an old racer, so now I only have two bikes, a 20 yr old hybrid "city bike", and my first battery-assisted cycle, "Big Red". Here…

Anyone have experience building an #ebike ?
I have a one speed huffy cruiser/city bike I want to convert. I don't know much about bikes but have electronics/soldering skill.
It would need to be a front wheel motor because the back has the brake. It's one of those back pedal brakes.
I don't want anything too crazy, maybe 15-20 MPH max at around a 10 mile range. I&…

eBike Nerdery
So the full decision matrix is:
- BBS02 48V 500W (750W) (a minor upgrade); would let me use a better battery and have a better margin when the battery gets low.
- BBSHD 48V or 52V (1000W); can be run with an extra spicy 52V battery for more power
- TSDZ8 48V 750W (1200W peak), the reengineered TSDZ2 with actual thermal capacity
- TSDZ16 48V 1000W (not sure what peak but geez that's a lot of motor)
- DM02 48V 500W (A team that made the TSDZ2 split off and went to make better motors)
- DM01 48V 1000W — I've not read up on it much but it's that same team I'm sure making a solid motor.
Also-rans:
- BBS02 36V 500W (existing motor); A spare would be nice so I can refurb mine without having to be without my bike.
- TSDZ2 48V 500W (I have one); tends to overheat and I ride hard. Not a winner.
- CYC motors: rather spendy. Nice stuff though.
- M625, M615, M225, M255: newer Bafang motors; more expensive, no real benefit, CAN bus is not well supported by third parties yet.
Pros of the Bafang BBS series: lots of parts available on the market. Lots of display options
Pros of the Tongsheng TSDZ series: Torque sensor!
Pros of the ToSeven DM series: Torque sensor, better build quality.

We just attended another travel show. This time: #mountainbiking in #ligurien from Harald Philipp.
The visuals were pretty cool. And riding such trails UPHILL was pretty impressive, too. Definitely only doable with an ebike.

I saw a post where some guy was like "I need advice on what to eat! I started riding an ebike to work every day but now I've lost 10 pounds."
Meanwhile I've been trying to ride every day for the past year, and started commuting to work (on an ebike) a month ago and I weight the exact fucking same.

Technically I got this bike last month (August 31st) but I just hit 300 miles during a lunch time ride at work.
I'll add another 6 miles getting home just to make it legit 300 miles this month.
The best thing about this ebike is that I can ride and ride and ride and my 55 year old bum knee doesn't make me pay for it later.

Secure bike parking at work… the ride in today was the fastest yet, despite the terrible winds! I attribute the short time to good luck in crossing busy roads and not having to wait multiple minutes to cross.

Today's ride into work was something. If I ride fast in the morning I take the Menomonee River Parkway but ride on the street going about 25mph. I saw a guy on the Oak Leaf Trail with a motorcycle helmet and "motocross style dirt bike" ebike. He was probably going 20mph but kept slowing down to pass people walking. Seemed like he should have been on the road with me. I was beating him on speed since I was on the road free of pedestrians.

Today's ebike ride was 8.25 miles along one of my normal routes but I tried to avoid pedal assist as much as I could. In a 45 minute ride I probably used it for less than 5 minutes just to deal with a few hills along the way. I really want to get used to riding without assist for more of a "workout" on it, but also have the backup of assist for the hills.

Besides the bruised bananas I am chuffed at today's ride to the store and general adventure ride around town, going places I didn't think I could get to by bike. I rode about 13 miles and a little over an hour. The ebike is great for outrunning traffic or getting up those nasty hills. I still go really slow (PAS 1 or turned off) when on the crowded Oak Leaf Trail.
