Kid: Dad!?! The (no longer maintained) software that school wants me to use is throwing a "Code C" error on the video we took in class (on a brand new iPhone). Can you help?
Me: I don't know who suggested you use this software. I don't know why. If the software company is telling you to pay for an upgrade, I can tell you I don't have money. But what I do have are a very particular set of skills, skills I have acquired over a very long career (in scientific software)

"Austin Peay State University will pay one of its professors $500,000 after initially firing him for a social media post made in the wake of conservative activist Charlie Kirk’s death. Darren Michael, an associate professor of acting and directing at APSU, was fired by the institution last year after comments on Kirk’s death. In September, APSU moved Michael to suspension before fully bringing him back into the classroom last month."

Excellent piece by @… on the ebb and flow of creative work and the inevitability and importance of fallow periods.
“What I failed to notice: that the fallow periods were doing something too. They were composting. I was taking in books and conversations and experiences without the pressure to immediately metabolize them into output. I was wandering without a map, which meant I sometimes stumbled into territory I never would have found if I'd been navigating by GPS.
The harvest seasons, when they returned, drew on seeds I hadn't remembered planting.”
