New crocodile species found fossilized in stone used to build Egypt’s Great Sphinx
About 45 million years ago in northern Egypt, a long-snouted crocodile hunted in the warm, shallow sea. Its bones settled into the same limestone formation that ancient Egyptians would later carry and carve into the Great Sphinx. Now, a century after researchers first dug up the fossils, they say the animal is a species new […]

When archaeologists with the National Museum of Denmark excavated a burial mound called GuldhŸj (Gold Hill) in southern Jutland in 1891,
they were surprised to find a well-preserved wooden folding chair
similar to those known from ancient Egypt and Greece.
But the GuldhŸj folding chair was made in Denmark around 3,400 years ago
and is the only completely preserved chair from the Bronze Age in Europe,
according to the National Museum of Denmark.
The chair …

Guldhøj folding chair: The only completely preserved chair from Bronze Age Europe
The remarkably preserved wooden folding chair was likely a status symbol and was found in the grave of a Bronze Age chieftain.

One resident at the retirement place I work at turned 100, and at his party, my grandmother learned of a nearly 200 year old bible he inherited and only recently physically acquired, elaborately decorated with over 1,000 engravings, a map of Palestine (specifically proudly advertised on the New Testament's intro), genealogies, summaries, interpretations, and even records of the owning family's births, marriages, and deaths, written in impeccably preserved cursive. She got my younger …

The Rosetta Stone remains a point of contention between Egypt and Britain more than two centuries since its discovery.
This week marks 227 years since the ancient artefact was found near the Egyptian city of Rashid by French forces during Napoleon Bonaparte’s campaign in the country.
It was taken by Britain after the French surrendered in 1801 and has been displayed at the British Museum in London since 1802.
An online campaign for its return is being led by former antiquiti…

I was chatting with my Falafel Guy while he prepared my order, and a Motorcycle Guy pulls up on the street and blares half of "We're An American Band" before finally shutting it off. He comes up, orders, and then turns & says to me, "Think this guy's an illegal?"
The casual racism & dickishness really threw me. All I could say was, "Unlikely, he just spent 6 months in Egypt so he can travel freely." So hopefully I spared Falafel Guy an ICE …

A giant image carved into the Arizona desert,
one that border wall crews damaged earlier this year,
turns out to be far older than anyone realized.
The artwork, called the Las Playas Intaglio,
is a huge fish shape scratched into the ground on the ancestral homeland of the Tohono O’odham south of Ajo.
It stretches more than 170 feet long and 50 feet wide,
and for years, experts guessed it was about 1,000 years old.
Now they know they were way off.

New dating reveals artwork damaged by border wall is oldest geoglyph in the Americas
New research shows an Ajo archaeological site damaged by border wall crews predates Egypt's first pyramid by 2,000 years.

“Extraordinary Rendition All Over Again”: U.S. Deportees Sent to Equatorial Guinea Beaten, Imprisoned
Two men deported from the United States to Equatorial Guinea were arrested by local police forces and transferred to a prison earlier this month, in apparent retaliation for speaking out about conditions they faced in the Central African country. Samson Birhane, who is from Eritrea, and Ahmed Soliman, a gay asylum seeker from Egypt, were both deported by the Trump administration despite U.S. immigration courts granting them protections. On September 11, police forces arrived at Hotel Bamy in th…

Charles Ross has a degree in math and a yen for physics.
He says he can sense celestial alignments, and feel the difference between colors of light in a spectrum.
When he needed a well dug for his desert home, he called a dowser.
The artist, 88, belongs to a generation of land artists who shed galleries and cities to work at a scale more common in ancient Egypt and Mesoamerica.
