Hate “The Algorithm?” RSS Is One of the Tools You’ve Been Looking For
RSS is one of the best examples we have of the open web, where we can design and customize how we experience the internet, not the other way around.

Trump’s daily declarations about how the war is over or almost over or will be over in 30 seconds or there's a ceasefire hiding under the next rock or whatever? That’s all non-information, just a conveyor belt of nothingburgers he feeds the press for them to dutifully regurgitate.
But •this•? This is actual news.

I adore Frank Putman’s Teletext64U. He even did an impressive reverse engineering of Danish teletext because the official feeds were weird, so he took the clean text version and made it look like the real TV version. It is super fast and you can change which provider you want to read from. Pretty interesting to see what the top stories are in neighbouring countries without clicking around and evading cookie banners and pop-overs and all the other web-horror. Just instant text with no clickba…
Sometimes people post RSS/iCal/etc feeds on web servers and then get conned into slapping Cloudflare in front. So feed readers get captchas instead of a feed.
But Cloudflare edge workers are privileged. So one can write a tiny proxy to fetch from the original website without a challenge.

This week on #ProFed: the web client now has RSS feeds. Not everywhere yet – authenticated feeds are a harder problem. Every approach I've considered so far is either tooc unsafe, too complicated for regular users, or not supported by most RSS readers.
Ideas very welcome. Are you maybe aware, how other applications do that? Are there any other applications at all, that do that?

Your Feed Is the Product of a Stealth Marketing Campaign

After 88 days of near-total internet blackout in Iran,
long-delayed messages, images and poems flooded phones and social media feeds at about 5pm on Tuesday,

The first reactions, however, were not celebratory.
Many new posts were threaded with scepticism, anxiety and anger.

Intriguing. "You and I both eat through the labor of people whose hands we might decline to shake if we just knew a little more about them. Their sentiments are not our own. Maybe they have bad politics. Or they’re kooky about health and wellness. Or they’re racists. In the vast, anonymous network that feeds us all, there are certainly quite a few people like that. If you asked them, they’d have a litany of bad things to say about us, too."
Today 10 years ago was the UK's big morning after... The morning after the referendum, with the dizzying realization that Brexit would indeed become a bitter reality, though no one fully knew at the time just what a shit show it would turn into, bringing out the worst in UK politics, revealing a deep national (though mostly English) insular psyche which still refuses to grasp its post-empire status and feeds on false nostalgia of an imagined past. This is the way. Unless the profits from data centers return to communities, it's just extraction.
And data centers don't really bring that many jobs. They're a few guys replacing parts as stuff burns out. Maintenance on power feeds. But mostly they sit there, trying to stay cool.

@… bringt mich auf Ideen … so richtig lange bin ich nie bei Feeds geblieben. Werde aber mal dem Vivaldi Browser eine Chance geben, mich zum Feeds abonnieren (und lesen) zu bewegen.
I now use ads on short form video feeds as a "stopping point" indicator.
Any time I want to be done with the endless scroll, I wait for an ad. Then I close the app.
I know someone is getting metrics on this somewhere. Maybe, it'll net me less ads in my algorithm. And it weirdly has helped me break the scrolling cycle, too.

I don’t get into the Bluesky vs Mastodon debate. I instead use both platforms. If you do as well, might I suggest Indigo by @…? Get your feeds together in one app and react/engage with posts.
