Outstanding episode of @alexpodyssey.bsky.social on the commute home today.@… had me laughing out loud in the first half but as ever the story behind Medusa is much darker, and much more interesting than you thought.

@… was wäre der Worst-Case?

Perhaps future work should focus on establishing trusted enclaves of knowledge and expertise.
If you’re a knowledge worker, perhaps sharing your knowledge publicly isn’t the best idea anymore. It’s a real bummer because it makes knowledge a luxury of the elite and wealthy.
Rather than working directly on the thing, you focus on the data that feeds into the machine that works on “the thing”. :\

Neue Studie, alter Befund: #SocialMedia ist nicht kaputt, sondern so gebaut. Algorithmen belohnen Empörung, Desinformation und Klicks – und genau das dominiert unsere Feeds. How are you doing these days? If you’re looking at the news or opening social media feeds, it’s a lot, I know.
I continue my practice of writing back to posts on social media. Also its antidote: writing back to works of art served up at random. It’s a little like surfing, taking the waves as they come. It’s a little like dancing. It’s one way to reclaim my attention, one way to stay alive to the present.

A new study found that there's a universal rhythm to how people speak: in 0.6Hz (1.667s) units. I find this fascinating because that's pretty close (though obviously only coincidentally) to 20 μdays (0.579Hz = 1.728s) and this feeds my fantasy about decimal time (standardize on days, 1 milliday = 1.44min, 10 microdays = 0.864s, we'd probably make use of centidays, which are just shy of quarter hours).

Soon, I’ll be throwing away all my desktop computers as well, though I’m keeping my Lenovo Thinkpad around. I hate computers, yet I use them.

2. Data centres also consume significant quantities of water.
