New SQL Notebook: Home made font tracing
There are many tools outwhere to create fonts from bitmap images, be it handwritten fonts or fonts from old books. They all involve quite a lot of homework. Letters have to be written carefully on a grid, bounding boxes have to be defined.
I wondered if the process could be made a little bit more straightforward. I want just to scan a book´s page and the tool creates the font for me, identifying all letters.

Xorg pixel fonts traced to TTF, great source for cases when you need a pixel font super family to replicate a more genuine retro pixel-perfect UI.

Example of available font matrix:
(Helvetica, Times, Courier, Century) × (8 10 11 12 14 14 17 18 20 24 25 34px) × (Regular, Bold) × (Roman, Italic/Oblique)

Today, I am going to be removing a favorite user feature: picking your own font for the Xogot text editor and La Terminal as now you need Apple's approval to use third party fonts installed in the system.
But at least my users will be safe from picking a font in bad taste.

Phanpy doesn't support quoots yet, so I'm using Mastodon's stock web interface and.. it's bad. Compare how busy it looks with unnecessary stuff (do I really need a "post" input form on screen at all times? Do I need a link to "favorites" visible at all times?), but also - the fonts are bad. Bad, bad, bad. Just so much harder to read. And the timeline toots just kind of run together, rather than being clearly delineated by whitespace in phanpy.

Phanpy interface, showing a single column with clearly delineated toots. Up top there's a hamburger icon (that gets you links to everything else), a bell icon (for notifications), and on the bottom right hand side of the screen a little ink quill icon for posting. And the font text is bigger/clearer.
Mastodon's official UI home screen. There are three columns taking up the whole screen. Left column has half taken up with an input form for posting a new toot. Then there's some wasted space, and at the bottom a bunch of text links: "social.ridetrans.it: [About] [Profiles directory] [privacy policy]", etc.

The middle column has all the toots from my timeline. There is only a single thin grey line separating the toots, and the text is small and somewhat difficult to read.

The right column…

The emergence and proliferation of “influencers” reminds me of when the LaserWriter first appeared, and everybody went nuts with the fonts and formatting and printing all kinds of bullshit because now they could, cheaply, and then gradually it all died down and became just another useful tool, except the influencers are still shitting out their crap because they all see the few who are making bank at it and dream of being the next superstar. Humans are so fucking gullible. Oooh, shiny!

One of the things that is interesting doing mass encodes is verifying all of the little things that can just mess everything up. If you're pulling in stuff like 3rd-party subtitles, then you have to verify the timing of the subtitles and adjust as necessary. Even better, if those are SubStation Alpha subtitles, you have to verify if the style fonts get added as attachments to the MKV file.
And if it's across something like a TV show, you definitely need to do this for every e…

Tacky WordArt style banner with multiple different types of fonts that says "Graphic design is my passion!"

So it's been pointed out that steve, the #jobserver, doesn't have a #logo. Here's a first approximation. Made in #Inkscape, using lines and fonts (the apples are from Noto Sans, I think). I also have an SVG version but browsers mess it up by substituting the apples for some colorful emojis with incompatible metrics. I've added a bright background, since the actual transparent background doesn't work on black (which seems to be Mastodon default).

In their PostScript Type 1 font specifications, Adobe makes a very clear statement: The source code of font programs is protected by copyright laws, but not the shapes of the fonts: "the typeface shapes are not protected, but the program text is. A copyright on
a Type 1 font program that generates a particular typeface does not preclude anyone from independently creating a different program for that same typeface."
