Just upgraded to MacOS 26.1 on a computer w/ an external 1920x1200 monitor and it looks TERRIBLE. The fonts in the official apps (Messages, etc) look grody with no way to change apparently. The whole interface is like an sophomore attempt w/ the over-rounded edges. So gross & amateurish #macos

@… just a question, I had a look at some your extraordinary work, and I realized that in the example pictures you have an Æ/æ and a Þ/þ, but there's no Ð/ð. Is the letter missing just in the picture or also the fonts? I know Icelandic doesn't have many uses, but since you created two of the special characters I wonder if you forgot the third
Even Adobe Fonts is down dammit... and here's me with only 4000 fonts stored locally 😅
Using fonts in R graphics can be tricky at times. {showtext} aims to make it easier: #rstats
Honestly, #emoji and icons in #Unicode are a true horror.
Yeah, sure. It's great that you don't have to use anymore and you can just paste a random Unicode character. You can get graphics into fields where only text was originally intended (like bug summaries). Even better, you can now easily get cool colorful icons on terminal with almost no effort.
However, it is an #accessibility nightmare. People are now encoding *information* in random graphical symbols. Symbols that require huge fonts to render, or huge character tables to describe.
Yeah, a bare carrying information sucks. However, you can add a *meaningful* alt-text to the image, and accessibility tools can use that text to provide meaningful context. Like "bug fix".
However, emojis and icons are symbolic. The best you can get is some description like "hammer and wrench", so people can kinda figure out that it's probably a "bug fix". Or maybe it was a "maintenance task"? Or you'll get a "unknown character 0x1F6E0". And I'm sure people will surely enjoy cross-referencing a "legend" of such "unknown characters".
@… Good question. It doesn’t seem to mess with display scaling, but I think perhaps they’re using fonts now that require a Retina/HiDPI display to look usable

I have a ten-year-old post about typefaces for dyslexia to which I’ve added two 2016 links:

I have a strong urgency to pipe docx files I receive from collaborators through pandoc before editing them. Even a docx-to-docx conversion would separate semantically meaningful formatting from accidental artifacts of previous editing steps like different line height, changing fonts, varying indentation etc. (I resist that urge b/c I don’t want to be responsible for any loss of meaningful formatting, but I cringe every time I have to edit a Word document.)

Paging @… to the courtesy phone. Keyboards, and fonts from old DOS games.
