Content warning: NZ Labour's wealth fund...

I can't help but wonder how NZ Labour, with their tepid 'national investment fund', are planning to combat secret (from all NZers) ISDS suits from multinational corporations if they deem such policies might affect their profits in NZ. They'd have to pull NZ out of the #CPTPPA first. Which I think would be entirely appropriate. I might even vote for them if they were really going…

Listening to CBC Radio Barrie this morning and they were interviewing the manager responsible for housing starts for the Town of Innisfil. The discussion was about missed targets for housing starts and what can be done to get back on track. You could tell that he was frustrated, but the reason for less homes being built was almost solely put on the downturn in the housing market. No one is buying, so private industry isn't building.
All levels of government are throwing money at the problem, with most of it incentivizing for-profit companies to put shovels in the ground. At some point, the Federal, Provincial, and Municipal governments have to realize that public housing, government leasehold development, co-operative housing, or subsidized family apartments must be considered to solve the housing shortage. Private industry will never have the same objectives of getting families into homes - without a calculation of significant profits first.

As we continue down this path of escalating nihilistic meme violence, it can feel like the worst things have become viral. We are drowning in the memetic effluent of a capitalist media that profits by maximizing engagement. But I wonder if anyone remembers "Pay it Forward?"
A movie came out in 2000 about a kid who started a viral kindness campaign. The idea was that you do something nice for someone else with the expectation that they do the same in the future. I never really saw the movie, but I do remember the time. There were a few weeks, maybe a few months, where people started doing it. People would just be randomly nice, and everything actually just started feeling better.
Over time, the world caught up. Capitalism consumed the whole thing, and life went back to normal. 9/11 happened the next year, and the US started down the path of becoming the most twisted and evil version of itself. But there was a short time that doing nice stuff was a viral meme, a thing that people just started doing.
Gun violence doesn't have to be the only viral meme we have. We can make good things happen too.

PSA: 🥵 Idk who needs to hear this, but in a heatwave for the love of science use air conditioning. If you don’t have air conditioning, get a portable unit as soon as possible.
The climate is going to get hotter and heat can very easily kill you or a loved one or a pet; or cause permanent disability.
Heat is a lot more dangerous than cold temperatures; even if you’re “young and healthy”.
The climate is already fucked and has long reached a tipping point as far as humans go—our only bet is large-scale CO2 extraction.
Sacrificing your health “to save energy*” for an imaginary fight that we have already lost is stupid. It’s also one of those “individual responsibility” mindfucks—the culprits for pollution are industry maximizing profits and governments that are not acting.
Anyway, stay cool.
*note that AC uses overall a lot less energy than heating does

This from IPPR on the greatly increased costs of UK government debt servicing seems reasonable from IPPR.
1) Tax the big 4 banks on the windfall profits that the government is, effectively, funding.
2) Slow down the QE buy-back.
I would also think that the government/bank could, as an exceptional measure, buy back some of the long term gilts using 'monetary financing' aka 'printing money'.

2. Stop subsidies to companies making huge profits.
3. Invest in social welfare programmes like education, health care, and the like.
4. Stop investing in war criminals like the Israeli government.
5. Enact policies to stop the climate crisis.

£100Bn or £20?
How much would water nationalisation cost initially?
If the companies are allowed to go bankrupt then the latter.
Of course then there will be more costs of investing properly in decent water infrastructure, water conservation and waste reduction and management.
But the public are being asked to pay for that, and profits and bonuses now.

Here is CUPW's fact sheet on Postal Banking “A Bank for Everyone”
Fun fact!
"our post office used to have a national savings bank – up until 1969 – and there is no reason we shouldn't have one today”
Some other reasons:
"Banks are failing to meet the needs of a growing number of Canadians. Thousands of towns and villages across our country do not have a bank. But many of them have a post office that could provide access to financial and banking services.”
"Postal banking is lucrative!
New Zealand: Kiwibank generated 81% of New Zealand Post's after tax profits.”
"France: Banque Postale has an obligation to provide products and services to as many people as possible. It provides a Livret A or passbook savings account, at no charge, to anyone who requests it. It also provides banking services to the financially vulnerable and financing for social housing, voluntary organizations and microentrepreneurs lacking bank credit.”
"Canada Post's secret postal banking study
Canada Post conducted a secret four-year study on postal banking that indicates that adding this service "would be a win-win strategy" for the corporation. This study was obtained though an Access to Information (ATI) request. Unfortunately, 701 of the study's 811 pages were redacted. CUPW has asked Canada Post's President to release the full report, but he has refused.”
