1. Plan going to Opole, via Kościan.
2. When you enter the train to Kościan, you discover that the change to Opole is delayed 15 minutes already. Consider changing in Leszno instead; if the delay increases, you'd have more options there.
3. Discover that there aren't any more options in Leszno today. Your change is delayed 30 minutes already. Return the reservations, and take one the other way, to Poznań instead.
4. Train station in Kościan. The displays aren't showing any delays, trains are announced normally. Tell people about the delays, so they won't stand in the -10°C waiting for the train to arrive.
5. Take the train to Poznań, and try to figure out what to do next.
6. Discover that the only reasonable choice going forward is Inowrocław: no delays and good return connection. It's the same train, so take another reservation. Your current seat is already taken there, so move elsewhere.
7. Your train should be followed by another one in the same direction, that departs from Poznań 6 minutes later. However, your train ends up waiting for another delayed train, so the other train goes first. The delay further increases as your train needs to slow down after the other train.
8. Reach Inowrocław 10 minutes later. That's not a problem, since you didn't have enough to see for all the time there anyway.
9. Discover that the town is more interesting than you thought, and you'd use more time.
10. When you almost get to the station, discover that your train is 10 minutes late. Not that you have any use for that time at this point.
11. When you're at the station, the train keeps increasing delay while waiting at the previous station, in Bydgoszcz. The station displays are completely useless, as they show only a random subset of regional trains, for no apparent reason. The announcements include all trains, but are rarely given.
12. The delay keeps increasing. Start thinking about getting a reservation for the next train to Poznań, in case it arrived first. You can't return the reservation after the planned departure time, and you can't have two reservations simultaneously, so reserve the seat from Mogilno, the next station.
13. The next train arrives first. While on board, you discover that you're not going to have any train home for 1.5 hr. Take another seat reservation to Leszno, where you can change into a suburban train and get home 15 minutes earlier than from Poznań. This time, your seat is still free.
14. The train departs 15 minutes delayed from Poznań. After all, you're changing trains in Kościan.
So I was going to go south, to Opole, via Kościan. Instead, I've ended up slingshotting north to Inowrocław, and getting back home via the same train as if I were in Opole.

We •also• want forces that pull toward convergence and consesnsus: forces that challenge ideas with contrary evidence — and forces that challenge vile ideas with “ugh, wtf, go away you Nazi turd.”
Yes, the latter too! Filtering is a crucial part of free society. You can’t have a useful discussion about climate change or global trade or time zones if you always set aside plenty of time for dingbats who insist the Earth is flat.
It’s not that people don’t think that! It’s that the idea deserves no more time and attention than that necessary to refute it — because it’s absurd and harmful and counterproductive.

But to the point, I just checked the online conversation about them... and I'm sad to notice how quickly people¹ forgot that Guillermo Rauch was very proud of sharing time with Benjamin #Netanyahu. He was so proud that he decided to share that moment with the entire world, so he showed us how little he cares for human rights, dignity and decency.
That's why I deemed necessary to remind folks about this serious contention point and inspire them to look for alternatives.

It seems a little contrived to say it's completed, really, since I can see that there are over half the moons I am yet to discover, and the game is still throwing new ideas at me each time I play. However, Peach has been rescued, Bowser is defeated, and the world is a better place. I stopped the wedding, which I hasten to add wouldn't have been legally binding in any case as Peach was not entering it of her own free will.

Why am I laughing? Apologies, my friend. It's just that as an INTJ, these illogical actions of yours...well, I find them to be amusing.

What's that? A free sample of your store's new crispened potato snacks? Not necessary. I've already calculated its flavor in my head. Mmm...perhaps a little more Sodium Chloride next time...

“I watch others from afar—chasing dreams I cannot reach, climbing ladders I cannot touch, celebrating victories that sound like whispers from another life. They wake without fear. They plan without hesitation. They move through a world that no longer belongs to me. And I… I measure my days by the tremor of explosions, by the moments when the sky feels ready to collapse.
War steals more than homes—it swallows the ordinary: quiet mornings, free laughter, hands meeting without trembling. …

Picture the human body. Zoom in on a single cell. It lives for a while, then splits or dies, as part of a community of cells that make up a particular tissue. This community lives together for many many cell-lifetimes, each performing their own favorite function and reproducing as much as necessary to maintain their community, consuming the essential resources they need and contributing back what they can so that the whole body can live for decades. Each community of cells is interdependent on the whole body, but also stable and sustainable over long periods of time.
Now imagine a cancer cell. It has lost its ability to harmonize with the whole and prioritize balance, instead consuming and reproducing as quickly as it can. As neighboring tissues start to die from its excess, it metastasizes, always spreading to new territory to fuel its unbalanced appetite. The inevitable result is death of the whole body, although through birth, that body can create a new fresh branch of tissues that may continue their stable existence free of cancer. Alternatively, radiation or chemotherapy might be able to kill off the cancer, at great cost to the other tissues, but permitting long-term survival.
To the cancer cell, the idea of decades-long survival of a tissue community is unbelievable. When your natural state is unbounded consumption, growth, and competition, the idea of interdependent cooperation (with tissues all around the body you're not even touching, no less) seems impossible, and the idea that a tissue might survive in a stable form for decades is ludicrous.
"Perhaps if conditions were bleak enough to perfectly balance incessant unrestrained growth against the depredations of a hostile environment it might be possible? I guess the past must have been horribly brutal, so that despite each tissue trying to grow as much as possible they each barely survived? Yes, a stable and sustainable population is probably only possible under conditions of perfectly extreme hardship, and in our current era of unfettered growth, we should rejoice that we live in much easier times!"
You can probably already see where I'm going with this metaphor, but did you know that there are human communities, alive today, that have been living sustainably for *tens, if not hundreds of thousands of years*?

P.S. if you're someone who likes to think about past populations and historical population growth, I cannot recommend the (short, free) game Opera Omnia by Stephen Lavelle enough: increpare.com/2009/02/opera-om

Kimi Onoda, Japan's new Minister of State for Economic Security, is a 43 year old half-Irish ex-game industry PR femcel with an extensive history of defending her exclusive attraction to anime boys on twitter

I don't think it's twisted at all.

I'm a woman who likes men, and I'm not interested in 3D men.

That's all.
I apologize for rambling on. I just couldn't stay silent... I really wish I had more allies within the party...

From here on, this is completely my personal opinion, but fundamentally, people who truly love 2D wouldn't touch 3D at all. I myself have absolutely no interest in 3D and consider it out of bounds. Maybe that kind of feeling is something only those involved can understand.
"Hurry up and get married," "Have kids" I've been told this by voters since my 20s, but even at 40, I still sigh every time these words are thrown at me. At what age will I finally be free of this?

In the 3D world, I'm married to my country, and besides, I've said my private life is 2D-exclusive, haven't I!! I'll say it over and over: I'm 2D-exclusive!!
I've been saying this for a while now, but I don't consider 3D (real-life) people as romantic prospects. I'm dead serious, not joking. For me, the very act of someone seeing the "possibility of marriage" in me is inherently uncomfortable (quoted from a reply)-it's the same as if you were to suggest to a gay person that they marry someone of the opposite sex... If you can understand it that way, that would help. This isn't about sexual harassment or anything like that; it's a deep-seated discomf…

Doing #Gentoo these days feels like being a small cell of unpaid volunteers opposing the enshittification of software. On one side, we're put up against a horde of full-time corporate developers. On the other, against young ambitious volunteers with lots of free time. And both can rapidly spew tons of mediocre code, and doing things wrong is so much easier than doing things right.
(Just to be clear, I'm not saying every corporation or every youngster does things wrong — there are people who care on the other side too.)

Sometimes inexplicably it is a few hours of waiting around. Maybe because they have fallen behind as the day goes on. So, I like to try to get the very early appointments (they start at 8am).

Content warning: Brief rant on AI & capitalism

We are cooked.
We were always a problem for the ones above: we had the opportunity to enjoy high levels of education, access to relatively free & unpolluted knowledge, and welfare systems that worked relatively well for at least half of our lifes.
That was unacceptable, and "AI" is here to fix that.
Big Tech and their fascist friends have convinced many among our younger generations about the idea that "AI" (in its current form) is cool, amazing, necessary, and unstoppable.
We can resist all we want, except it's not our resistance that matters, but the resistance of the younger ones who haven't finished their formal studies yet.
Mozilla's CEO knows it... so he'll happily contribute to dumb us down as much as possible (before anyone has time to react) to ensure that we don't bother ever again the fragile sensibilites of his friends, our capitalist overlords.

I did a huge grafana upgrade from something like v7.x to v12..3.0 and now the load average is often between 15 and 30!
It's not obvious to me why though.
The VM it's on has 2 CPUs and 8G RAM of which about 4G is free. The average CPU use is just 18%. This would make me suspect iowait but it rarely budges from 0%.
Now, periodically the two CPUs are totally pegged though this only lasts a short time and the service still seems responsive. Maybe it's that?
