Zhu on AI/AGI: 'A sign of true intelligence... is the ability to reason towards a goal with minimal inputs ... a “small data, big task” approach, compared with the “big data, small task” approach employed by large language models like ChatGPT. AGI... is characterised by qualities such as resourcefulness in novel situations, social and physical intuition, and an understanding of cause and effect. Large language models... will never achieve this.'

Sorry for posting so many YouTube videos but this is great and geeky: a video essay about "Akira elevators", those platforms that travel horizontally and vertically at the same time. I remember the Half-Life example and the original from Akira. They are an awesome design but a bit like mechas they are futuristic tools that feel incredibly dangerous to build as a means to transport humans.

Content warning: South Park S27

TWENTY SEVEN series! Man. South Park continues to be pretty cool too.
Still both fresh and yet familiar. I remain in awe of the consistency of the show over more than half my whole life now.
Stupid cock and fart jokes with an absurd setup which on a second level is mentioning and mocking the true absurdity and violence of real life.
Satan being Trump's lover in a rehash of the Sadam Hussain skit is lovely.
They seem determined to try and get cancelled, but haven't managed that in 27 years. Maybe it's a small-dick joke that'll finally do them in?
Still got half of this season to watch. Seems like it's mostly bi-weekly now? Or every episode is delayed.

Day 10 and a Half – Crossing the Finish Line
My trip could have ended better, but only because we’re all pretty much digital addicts. My last bike ride was nothing but rain — 38 km of pure wetness, and not the kind I would like. The result? My phone decided to end its life. RIP iPhone (2022–2025).
As I rolled into Copenhagen, I passed a laundromat. No hesitation: I went straight in, stripped off my wet clothes, and stuffed everything in a dryer. Flip-flops with socks — maybe a si…

I always find the use of first person plural pronouns in discussions of the distant future to be too cute…
Humans didn’t exist a million years ago. There were some crafty hominid apes but not the sort you could clean up and mistake for a human.
There is no “us” 7 billion years from now. There is very likely no “us” in half a million years. We may or may not have descendants but they won’t be “us” in any sense.

The Conjuring: Last Rites review: This was a mind-numbing corporate séance packaged as “horror.” Boring as hell.
Why tf do people bow down to this mass-produced ghost story machine? It's like, they summoned capitalism itself onto the screen, empty, repetitive, and designed to keep the herd lulled.
Sitting in that cinema felt like half my soul was on life-support. Horror’s supposed to rattle authority, not tuck you back into your consumer coma.
I found it awfully boring.…

There are a finite number of jokes in the universe.

Now that I’m almost certainly past the half-way point of my life, I’ve realized that many things I used to care about matter little to me. Tech is getting worse in most ways, few new movies interest me, most online spaces are not enjoyable to me. What I am bummed about not getting to experience, though, is meeting new, wonderful generations - and especially not getting to hear their music. Because some of the new bands out there are just *wild*, and I love it so, so much.

If I could write the beauty of your eyes,
And in fresh numbers number all your graces,
The age to come would say 'This poet lies;
Such heavenly touches ne'er touch'd earthly faces.'
So should my papers, yellow'd …

What Other #PunkRock Tour Admits It's Age And Sets Up Its Own Museum?
Kevin Lyman's Tour That First Tried To Bring #Sublime To America Returns To The

LBC PRESS-TELEGRAM

Vans Warped Tour’s 30th
anniversary is a love
letter to a scene that
never died.

Performances from day one included
The All-American Rejects, A Day to
Remember, Sublime, Pennywise,
Silverstein, Black Veil Brides, and more.

At Shoreline Waterfront in Long Beach, Sublime delivered a
hometown set on the Vans Left Foot Stage during Warped
Tour's 30th anniversary.

Performance Highlights: From
Tony Hawk to Long Beach Legends
Goldfinger’s set brought one of the day's most unforgettable moments when skate legend Tony Hawk took the stage to sing “Superman,” the same track that helped define a generation via the Tony Hawks Pro Skater video game, released in '99.

The crowd erupted, and fans like
Ish Costales of Monrovia, California, were visibly emotional. “I used to waste hours playing that game as a kid to just forget about school and life,” Costales said.…
“Need a shirt that says ‘I survived Warped Tour,” one fan joked in the comments, a phrase that just about summed it up.

Offstage: Record Labels, Skate
Ramps & Museum Moments

Beyond the music, the grounds paid homage to Warped’s roots. Skaters and BMX riders hit the half-pipe throughout the weekend, echoing the
early days when action sports and punk rock were side-by-side. A dedicated Record Label Row let fans engage with independent labels, snag exclusive merch, and meet artists.

Content warning: communication skills for hospice care, pilot course, UK

Anyone working in #hospice care in the UK, this might be of interest: pilot courses for teams of 6 to 12 people, on how to use "Clean Language" in conversations about end-of-life care.
1 day in-person, or 2 x half a day if online. CPD certificate.
"Clean Language" is about how you can talk with people and listen to people without accidentally bringing in your own baggage when you didn't mean to.
This skill can help you reach clearer/deeper understanding of other people's worlds. And it can mean you're less likely to set off unnecessary disagreements, so that conversations go more smoothly.
Pilot aimed at South West, Yorkshire & North East. I asked Judy why those areas in particular, and she said those are areas where they're building up "clusters of expertise", but actually it could be any UK end-of-life group.
(I slightly know Judy from having been to a little community event of hers about Clean Language in healthcare. And we have colleagues in common.)
