A recent post about a library publishing guidelines on citing genAI got me thinking about when that might be appropriate (rarely) or not (almost always), and what those cites should look like when they are needed. I have a new post talking about why genAI output shouldn’t be cited in most cases and, for when they must be, giving examples from common style guides.

A recent post on Bluesky lamenting a university library publishing guidelines for citing generative AI (genAI) got me thinking about why one would want to do that in the first place and then, assuming there's a valid reason, what that citation should look like. So, that's what I'm exploring today.

People seem to be pushing LLMs as the saviour to this problem. I think Lisp and Prolog are probably better answers.
