Abstract: The n2EDM experiment at the Paul Scherrer Institute aims to conduct a high-sensitivity search for the electric dipole moment of the neutron. Magnetic stability and control are achieved through a combination of passive shielding, provided by a magnetically shielded room (MSR), and a surrounding active field compensation system by an Active Magnetic Shield (AMS). The AMS is a feedback-controlled system of eight coils spanned on an irregular grid, designed to provide magnetic stability to the enclosed volume by actively suppressing external magnetic disturbances. It can compensate static and variable magnetic fields up to $\pm 50$ $\mu$T (homogeneous components) and $\pm 5$ $\mu$T/m (first-order gradients), suppressing them to a few $\mu$T in the sub-Hertz frequency range. We present a full finite element simulation of magnetic fields generated by the AMS in the presence of the MSR. This simulation is of sufficient accuracy to approach our measurements. We demonstrate how the simulation can be used with an example, obtaining an optimal number and placement of feedback sensors using genetic algorithms.

Legendrian and Lagrangian higher torsion

Abstract: Let $M$ be a closed manifold. We introduce a family of Legendrian isotopy invariants for Legendrians in $J^1M$, which we collectively call Legendrian higher torsion. Given a choice of a class $\mathcal{F}$ of fibre bundles over $M$, equipped with suitable unitary local systems, the Legendrian higher torsion of a Legendrian $\Lambda \subset J^1M$ is the subset of $H^*(M;\mathbf{R})$ consisting of higher Reidemeister torsion cohomology classes of fibre bundles $W$ over $M$ in the class $\mathcal{F}$ such that $\Lambda$ admits a generating function on a stabilization of $W$. For the class of tube bundles in the sense of Waldhausen we call the invariant tube torsion. In particular, we show that the tube torsion of a nearby Lagrangian $L \subset T^*M$ is well-defined when the stable Gauss map $L \to U/O$ is trivial and consists of a union of cosets of a normalized version of the Pontryagin character. We also identify a distinguished coset, invariant under Hamiltonian isotopy of $L$, which we call nearby Lagrangian torsion. We do not know whether nearby Lagrangians must have trivial tube torsion, as would follow from the nearby Lagrangian conjecture. However, we show that there exist Legendrians $\Lambda \subset J^1M$ with nontrivial tube torsion whose projection $\Lambda \to M$ is homotopic to a diffeomorphism.

Abstract: This paper is concerned with lifting modules along a surjective map of noetherian local rings, say $\varphi \colon R \twoheadrightarrow S$. A finitely generated $R$-module $L$ is a naive lift of an $S$-module $M$ if $L \otimes_R S \cong M$. We are concerned with the maximum depth and dimension among all naive lifts of $M$, which we call the liftable depth and liftable dimension, respectively, of $M$ along $\varphi$. We approach this via a notion of lifting systems that we introduce in this paper. We then provide a necessary and sufficient condition for a module of finite length to lift and Serre lift to a regular local ring in terms of lifting systems.

Abstract: Nuclear security operations and forensic investigations require the utilization of a suite of instruments ranging from passive gamma spectrometers to high-precision laboratory sample analyzers. Gamma spectroscopy survey is further broken down into wide-area search performed with large-volume scintillator-based mobile survey spectrometers which are integrated with geographic position sensors for mapping and identification of hot zones, and high-precision long-dwell measurements using solid state spectrometers for follow-on characterization to establish isotopic content and ratios. While performing well at detecting the presence, quantity and type of radioactivity, all of these methods have limited ability to determine the location of a source of radioactivity. In recent years, technology advances have resulted in gamma imager devices which can create an image of the distribution of radioactive sources using the gamma emissions which accompany radioactive decay, and overlay this on an optical photograph of the environment. These gamma imaging devices have arisen out of methods developed for medical physics, experimental particle physics, and astrophysics, resulting in a proliferation of different technological approaches. Those responsible for establishing a nuclear security concept of operations, require guidance to choose the proper gamma imager for each of the application spaces in a tiered response. Here the results of an intercomparison of two gamma imagers based on two widely different technologies, semiconductor and scintillator detectors, are presented. The optimal utilization of these imaging technologies in a tiered response is discussed based on the results of the trial. Finally, an outlook on future directions for gamma imaging advances is provided.

Autotuning T-PaiNN: Enabling Data-Efficient GNN Interatomic Potential Development via Classical-to-Quantum Transfer Learning

arxiv.org/abs/2603.24752 arxiv.org/pdf/2603.24752 arxiv.org/html/2603.24752

Abstract: Machine-learned interatomic potentials (MLIPs), particularly graph neural network (GNN)-based models, offer a promising route to achieving near-density functional theory (DFT) accuracy at significantly reduced computational cost. However, their practical deployment is often limited by the large volumes of expensive quantum mechanical training data required. In this work, we introduce a transfer learning framework, Transfer-PaiNN (T-PaiNN), that substantially improves the data efficiency of GNN-MLIPs by leveraging inexpensive classical force field data. The approach consists of pretraining a PaiNN MLIP architecture on large-scale datasets generated from classical molecular simulations, followed by fine-tuning (dubbed autotuning) using a comparatively small DFT dataset. We demonstrate the effectiveness of autotuning T-PaiNN on both gas-phase molecular systems (QM9 dataset) and condensed-phase liquid water. Across all cases, T-PaiNN significantly outperforms models trained solely on DFT data, achieving order-of-magnitude reductions in mean absolute error while accelerating training convergence. For example, using the QM9 data set, error reductions of up to 25 times are observed in low-data regimes, while liquid water simulations show improved predictions of energies, forces, and experimentally relevant properties such as density and diffusion. These gains arise from the model's ability to learn general features of the potential energy surface from extensive classical sampling, which are subsequently refined to quantum accuracy. Overall, this work establishes transfer learning from classical force fields as a practical and computationally efficient strategy for developing high-accuracy, data-efficient GNN interatomic potentials, enabling broader application of MLIPs to complex chemical systems.
