Yes, it's the mandatory part that makes the difference. It's not enough to have formatters - Gofmt was not even early in that race - but enforcing its use is critical. And so is not providing options to control the format.

@robpike@hachyderm.io So. Good job on that. I did a longish reply on ycombinator. TL;DR; The problem I face often is that we defined formatting rules but did not make them strictly mandatory. This leads to (non-functional) divergence between reality and "correct". That delta is a huge problem for code janitors. OTOH, there are like 3 janitors for every 1000 programmers, so maybe this is just the world's smallest violin playing just for them.
