This study investigates the presence of left-wing extremism on the Lemmygrad.ml instance of the decentralized social media platform Lemmy, from its launch in 2019 up to a month after the bans of the subreddits r/GenZedong and r/GenZhou. We conduct a temporal analysis on Lemmygrad.ml's user activity, with also measuring the degree of highly abusive or hateful content. One thing that came to mind, reading about the BBC putting up a paywall, is how much a lot of US perception of the UK, and especially London, is shaped by the most extreme right wing bloviators.
When a left-wing muslim became the presumptive candidate for NY mayor, many people were losing their minds.
Pointing out that London has had a left-wing muslim mayor for almost a decade is met with a conception of London that is a mix of sharia law and knife murders.

Where are the political and intellectual resources to deal with these developments, when parties of the left have abandoned the terrain of class politics while the new post-left is off in search of ‘identity’? What, for example, will fill the political vacuum left by the defection of working class parties, as the restructuration of capitalism increases the strains along the fault lines of class and creates new forms of insecure and vulnerable labour? Did you know that in two states in the USA there is no “Democratic Party” but a merged coalition that acts in some ways like the Democratic Party but has different values and a different platform?
In Minnesota, for example, there's the Minnesota Democratic–Farmer–Labor Party (which was a merge in 1944 between the Farmer-Labor Party and the Democratic Party), which has values like Democratic Socialism and left-wing populism!

After all, they called Joe Biden, the former Senator from CapitalOne and a devout Catholic, a socialist and communist.
One of the differences between the Right and Left in the USA is that the Right is dedicated to the idea of political tribal solidarity and social binaries, while the Left puts an overriding emphasis on its own diversity, that of the Right, and that of society.
It is part of how they manage to maintain themselves in power.

It’s especially frustrating because there •is• election manipulation happening in plain sight: voter suppression, gerrymandering, a vast media empire of right-wing falsehood, microtargeted disinformation from billionaires and hostile foreign states alike, GOP- and Putin-backed grifters posing as left-leaning third party candidates and then just pocketing the donations and disappearing —
•none• of that even in doubt. We do not need to search for a shadowy conspiracy. Democracy’s being strangled in broad daylight.
