Starting the fourth chapter "The Rise of the Web" of #ThisIsForEveryone, I am pleasently surprised to find out a librarian — Louise Addis of the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center (SLAC) — played an important, supportive role in the very first days of the web.

From page 89 of TBL's "This for everyone": "Estimates vary, but only around 2 million people regularly used the internet in 1991 — approximately 0.03 per cent of the Earth’s population. Most of them were academics, since the internet hadn't yet been formally opened to the public, and the concept of an Internet Service Provider (ISP) was still in its infancy. One of those early users was Paul Kunz, a particle physicist and software developer at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center (SLAC) in Me…

Ein #Lesetipp, den ich Euch momentan besonders ans Herz legen möchte, weil wir uns wieder in Richtung der Zeiten bewegen, von denen dieser Roman, der auf einer realen Person basiert, handelt:
The Personal Librarian

A librarian fired by county officials in Campbell County, Wyoming, for refusing to remove LGBTQ books from shelves got the last laugh with a $700,000 settlement

The Ann Arbor library is so good at community engagement that yesterday the voters gave them a chunk of land in downtown AA for development.

Today, I got to tell a nasty, loud, mean Karen who was being shitty to one of my favorite nail techs to calm her tits. When she tried to yell at me, I shooshed her librarian style.
I woulda made a good librarian.

I received my new national identity card today. The process of getting it was very easy. I went to the library last week, said I'd lost my id card, the librarian looked me up on the database, checked that my face matched the photo in the database, confirmed that my address hadn't changed. Then she ordered me a new card (no cost).
I really don't understand why the English think this is so threatening.

Part of my national identity card, with part of the letter it came with.

"A key principle of PKM is that no one has the right answer, but together we can create better ways of understanding complex systems. We each need to find others who are sharing their knowledge flow and in turn contribute our own. It’s not about being a better digital librarian, it’s about becoming a participating member of a networked organization, economy and society."

In spite of having read several of Iain Banks' non-Sci Fi oeuvre I had never been remotely tempted by the culture novels, though I have friends who raves about them at Uni. Then I spotted this on a summer reading table at the library, which I suppose shows the value of a good librarian...
#IainMBanks #Culture novel. Actually, surprisingly my first. That's the gift of both train travel and a good book. #bookstodon #booksky #FlyingLess
