The 81st edition of De Programmatica Ipsum is out!
This month, we worry about the perils of vibe coding in the minds of new generations of software developers; in the Library section, we review "Geek Sublime" by Vikram Chandra; and in our Vidéothèque section, we watch a 1986 interview of Grace Hopper at "Late Night with David Letterman".

Trump White House puts preschool funding first on its list of "woke programs" to be eliminated.

UTS TO WOKE PROGRAMS
President Trump is committed to eliminating radical gender and racial ideologies that poison the minds of
Americans. The President’s FY 2026 Budget upholds the Constitution by eliminating funding for cultural
Marxism.
Woke Program Cuts Highlights:
• Preschool Development Grants. The Budget eliminates this $315 million grant program that was a

Our minds have to make sense of it by making a story up overcomecompulsivehoarding.co.

Thank you! Great history! Great Prmary sources. Great interpretations that modern minds can see and believe. It's a bunch of posts, AND they're all worth it.

Both Harvard and Columbia are failing to articulate the need and meaning of education, besides economic value. There is no sense of humanity or the humanities or the search for a truths. Both schools are for-profit companies in the minds of their boards, and their presidents reflect that understanding.

I’ve been thinking about how we stay sane in the constant unfolding crisis and dizzying spectacle — what practices help us stay true to our own minds and hearts?
One possibility is the alchemy of turning news into poetry, like fairytale straw into gold.

The idea is to provide a safe haven and a fertile ground for the next generation of scientists to work in peace and freedom to solve the most significant challenges of our time; but the geopolitical argument will prevail. As Jorge Luis Borges said in his short story “Nathaniel Hawthorne” from his book “Other Inquisitions” (1952):
“The past is indestructible; sooner or later all things return, and one of the things that return is the project to abolish the past.”

techno-political rant
Say what you want about using the right tool for each problem, but there are tools that suck no matter what.
I'm tired of people portraying legit technical criticism as "biased" and "religious", while at the same time they present themselves as tolerant and open-minded (spoiler: for the most part, they aren't).
Almost every day of my life I have to deal with the nasty consequences of ultra-dumb decisions made by the very same people who are obsessed with productivity and criticise all day long whoever pushes for any design that shows any minim amount of care and/or deep thought (mostly via strawmen arguments).
And, of course, unironically: this has a lot to do with capitalism, as many of our other social and economic problems.
They arrive, have a strike of super-productivity for a few weeks/months and then use that as a trampoline to raise through the ranks or abandon ship before having to face the consequences of their technical crimes.
Then others arrive and are obviously slower at that same job... so the uneducated observers start believing that these newcomers aren't as good as the class traitors who wrote the initial nasty code.
To make things worse, if any of these newcomers dare to speak openly about introducing good practices... this ends up creating a new mental association (in the minds of uneducated observers) between "good engineering" and "lack of productivity".
The ones trying to fix the mess are indeed slower, not because they try to do things the right way though, but because they have to waste vasts amounts of time fixing what is objectively broken besides doing the "visible" work.
Most of today's established "super-productive" ones, if they were starting today, would be probably "vibe coders", certainly not what we commonly understand as a programmer. Not because AI-coding is the future, but because they never cared about the trade at all. They were here only for the grift.

Sonnet 117 - CXVII
Accuse me thus: that I have scanted all,
Wherein I should your great deserts repay,
Forgot upon your dearest love to call,
Whereto all bonds do tie me day by day;
That I have frequent been with unknown minds,
And given to time your own dear-purchased right;
That I have hoisted sail to all the winds
Which should transport me farthest from your sight.
Book both my wilfulness and errors down,
And on just proof surmis…

"Simultaneously to Steve Jobs’s introduction of the iPhone in January 2007, Google started publishing a series of blog posts called “Testing on the Toilet”. On May 15th, 2008, this series featured a famous issue: “TotT: Using Dependancy Injection to Avoid Singletons.” The writing was literally on the wall of toilets worldwide: Singletons are bad™®©. Sadly, the much more exciting idea of dependency injection contained in the article got lost in the minds of most readers."
