OTD in 1977 Carl Woese and George Fox redrew the tree of life.
They proposed a third “urkingdom”
—the “archaebacteria”
—in addition to eukaryotes and bacteria.
Woese later called this taxon “Archea.”
AFAIK, he didn’t publish his famous tree diagram until the late 80s.

🪏 Time to root out the US rot from Scotland:
"A firm that runs Scotland’s prisoner transfer service is linked to a US multinational whose subsidiary provides the US government’s Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) with investigators who hunt down immigrants.
GEOAmey – GEO Group’s UK joint venture – has a £240m contract to escort prisoners in Scotland until January 2027.
GEO Group is based in the US and has funded Donald Trump."

Paraphrase of my #IOT hardware rant on slack (unsurprising, since I maintain github.com/unixorn/internet-of)
In a perfect world IOT hardware companies should:
- Have to escrow the firmware. And escrow the source code, not just the binary blob
- The firmware isn't allowed to use binary blobs as device drivers. Chip manufacturers will have to suck it up and document their chips or hardware companies won't be able to use them
- Have to escrow any keys required to update the firmware
- To be sold, have to have a local API, with at a minimum, functionality to update the firmware once the hardware company stops support. No "You have to use our crapware that only works on a phone/computer OS two major versions old, and it has to download firmware from our servers that got turned off when we went out of business / dropped the product's support
- Eighteen months with no updates causes release of the escrowed firmware and update keys. There are bound to be at least some security updates required in that time
- Have to have clearly labeled pads on the board for updating firmware and running diagnostics.
- Not be allowed to lock consumers out of reflashing the firmware. If someone flashes custom firmware before the escrowed firmware is released, and the custom firmware bricks the device, that's on the person who reflashed it, not the company.

Good Morning #Canada
Before #WWII, Canada could still be considered a tiny nation in terms of our influence on world affairs. But after the conflict broke out, we contributed well beyond expectations and our navy was an example. The Royal Canadian Navy (RCN) started the war with only 13 vessels, but when WWII ended, we had the 4th largest navy in the world. By 1945 the RCN had 450 ships in all, plus many smaller auxiliary units. This 1945 figure breaks down as follows: 2 cruisers, 17 destroyers, 68 frigates, 112 corvettes, 67 minesweepers, 12 escort ships, 75 Fairmile motor launches. During WWII, Canadian shipyards built a total of 4,047 naval vessels and 410 merchant ships for a grand total of 4,457 ships. The naval vessels included over 300 anti-submarine warships, as well as thousands of landing craft, escort ships, minesweepers, and tugs.

It's utterly brainwormed the way people have projected political identities onto software projects. The level of ideological capture that politics exerts on the average person is wildly out of proportion with their ability to influence it, and has led to terrible outcomes for society in general.
Anyway, on a more serious note, I'm concerned that my 13mm box end wrench has become fash. Looking for a good option for a woke wrench. Recommendations welcome.

Wow. #India #women successfully chase down Australia's monster 338 runs in ODI Word Cup #Cricekt semis. 🏏 👩
Seeing the target and hearing of two India wickets falling at ~80, I was fairly certain India would lose this but boy did they show how to chase. 👏
