The questions "Do you have a passport?" and "Do you have your passport on you in the office right now?" are different fucking questions and you should clarify which you mean before you direct me down an irreversible cul-de-sac in your application's verification logic.

I've gone through exactly what Ellen Pompeo did at LAX. I was headed to Italy & the TSA detected something on my shoes. Sirens went off & before I could say anything, I got detained.
A guy with military gear & a rifle appears & I got to play 20 Qs for an hour. I'm showing my plane ticket, itinerary, passport, driver's license, business card, Academy of Magical Arts membership card, Disney D23 card... not kidding.

Damn, using the UK's visa app to read a passport chip via NFC is a pretty extreme exercise in frustration. Got locked out twice (on the backend by UK servers, not the app itself!) in my attempts, each with an hour wait to be unlocked.

I thought self identification was a bad thing??

I went downstairs, filled the kettle, waited for it boil, and poured the water into my mug.
I then popped back upstairs for 5 minutes to let it brew. Went back down to the kitchen, gave it a stir. "Hmm this looks a bit weak".
I'd only forgotten to put a bloody tea bag in the mug at the start of the exercise, hadn't I.
Obviously I have now contacted the government and arranged to hand in my British passport.

A couple weeks ago I went through PDX airport security with my not-Real-ID-compliant driver's license, mostly out of curiosity. They asked me if I had another ID like a passport. When I said no, they sent me to some guy who did a chemical wipe test of my phone, before letting me continue.
I think the rationale is that any incremental improvement to security checks increases the difficulty for malicious actors, but it still feels like Maxwell Smart security

Spanish police busted a human smuggling network that had migrants in Greece pay €3000 to be handed a boarding pass and fake passport and travel documents so they could then fly to the UK or Canada. The Canada Border Service Agency flagged it to the Spanish police in 2024.
