Oh god, the picture invokes some very mousetrap-adjacent vibes, in the @… sense of the word. mamot.fr/@pluralistic/11444013

Mi opinias ke ĉiu politikisto kaj aktivisto devus legi ĉi tiun. Ne haveblas ia perfekta sistemo, kiu havas ian utilan funkcion. Kiel la rubriko diras: "Ĉiu komplika ekosistemo havas parazitojn." Estas pli praktike permesi iom da difektoj kaj misuzoj, ol celi perfektecon. La argumentoj temu pri kiom je kia kosto.

Join your faculty union. If you don't have a local union (or even if you do) join the AAUP. Together we can work to make academia what it should be.

P.S. Hat tip to @… for the radium reference. He was talking about other things (pluralistic.net/2024/09/19/jus), but the whole vibe of that “Radium will magically restore you to health!” era is by far the best historical comparison I’ve found for the current froth-mouthed AI hype.

And from the [not] #freemarket annals:
"And of course, patients don't get to merge to monopoly (that's what governments are for, and we know how Blue Cross feels about single payer care). Workers don't get to merge to monopoly either (that's what unions are for, and no one hates a union more than a health care monopolist)."

What I really like to see is that 35% of visitors to Sunset Dunes Park are from adjacent neighborhoods! (That is a plurality, by the way.)

A pie chart that shows where visitors to Sunset Dunes Park come from, on a photo looking north along the park, showing people walking and roller skating, and misty hills in the background. The breakdown of visitors is 35% from nearby, 27% from other parts of SF, 19% from the SF peninsula, 12% from the East Bay, and 7% from more distant locations (world-wide, based on people I've overheard in the park)
