This fourth of July, as we shoot off fireworks or enjoy time with our own families, we think of people across the country who have been taken from theirs. Share these ads to demand an end to the abductions.

What's a good number of presentations to fit in a conference day?
NIME (a single-track conference with low acceptance rate), fits in about 14 presentations of various lengths (all pretty darn short - 5, 10, or 15 mins), amongst a couple of other sessions. They have 5 papers per 90 minute session. nime2025.org/program/

Since migrating away from big tech platforms (including Google Drive) I have been using Libreoffice for my writing and presentations.
I often get asked why I do not use OnlyOffice since it looks so much better (especially the web client). Two answers:
- The presentation tools of OnlyOffice are too barebones
But more importantly:
OnlyOffice is a company that seems to be controlled by a Russian guy who invests a lot of time to hide the fact that OnlyOffice is Russian (see…

After the whole "I asked ChatGPT" as talk opener I've recently seen a lot of "Look, my kids are using AI to build their own games and that's beautiful" stuff in presentations.
Makes me sad that instead of wanting kids to learn how to build something they get taught to accept what the kinda-passable code generator craps out. What they learn is not how to conceptualize or build something, what they learn is that shit comes from nowhere if you just match your e…

My pet peeve in student (or generally academic) presentations: Distorted images. It’s not that difficult to keep the aspect ratio when resizing images, is it?! Don’t they see it or don’t they care? 🧐

As for the youth, of which I tend to think of these games as sales presentations for loans, they were good.
At 16, Ngumoha really looks like an up and comer. He's patient mostly, but quite direct as well.
I liked Nyoni last year and I liked him yesterday. He wasn't flashy, but he always made the right decision at the right time.
Stephenson was good in the middle. I think he looked a bit nervous on the ball, but made no real mistakes. Good performance.

Not just code today.
