At Newport in 1960, for a few days in someone’s backyard, musicians refused to let the institutions that packaged their work decide what they would play. They asserted control. They played like the music belonged to them.

The Night Jazz Fought Back
In 1960, while the official Newport Jazz Festival collapsed into riots, Charles Mingus and Max Roach organized a breakaway event that asked a question the music industry has never honestly answered.

How that mind works.
- I see the documentary This Is Pop about XTC mentioned on the Tubes and rewatch about half an hour of it
