Rising surface salinity and declining sea ice - a new Southern Ocean state revealed by satellites: #salinity across the circumpolar Southern Ocean since 2015. This shift has weakened upper-ocean stratification, coinciding with a dramatic decline in Antarctic sea ice coverage. Additionally, rising salinity facilitated the reemergence of the Maud Rise polynya in the Weddell Sea, a phenomenon last observed in the mid-1970s. Crucially, we demonstrate that satellites can now monitor these changes in real time, providing essential evidence of the Southern Ocean’s potential transition toward persistently reduced sea ice coverage" -> A change in the Southern Ocean structure can have climate implications: icm.csic.es/en/news/change-sou (the original version of this press release was full of errors as bsky.app/profile/mkreutzfeldt. has documented but - as bsky.app/profile/micefearboggi points out - the correction was done in a most intransparent way).

The Mevcury News - May 12, when Raquedan-Retuta staggered into her aunt’s room and collapsed on the bed following a gunshot. Ray came in behind her. The family had stationary cameras on inside the home that captured what happened next, authorities said. “She got shot,” Ray reportedly told Raquedan- Retuta’s aunt, who promptly jumped off the bed and began screaming for help, slapping Ray on the back on her way out. Two others in the home called police, while Raquedan-Retuta’s aunt demanded to kn…
Ray simply responded, “nobody cares,” according to police. Deputies found a Glock 17 9mm semi-automatic pistol inside the bedroom, along with a spent cartridge. The gun had no magazine inside but was equipped with a tactical strobe light, authorities said.

There was another thing noteworthy about the pistol: It had been reported stolen in Decatur, Georgia, back in 2013. Somehow, the pistol made its way to the Bay Area, where a high schooler purchased it from someone who hasn't yet been publicl…

It’s important to note some exceptions, not all AI pioneers fell into this trap.
Some, like Seymour Papert went to do a lot of good (creator of Logo, Mindstorms and a principal of One Laptop Per Child).

Hedge fund billionaire
Ken Griffin has warned that Trump’s pressure on the Fed and dismissal of officials
risk eroding U.S. institutional credibility and driving up long-term borrowing costs.
He cautioned that once confidence is lost
—as seen in past crises from Nixon’s Fed battles to Liz Truss’s meltdown in the U.K.
—it is costly to rebuild.

A fake, scuffed, used Photoshopped book titled "The 9 O'Clock Hashtag Games," attributed to Paul Chambers as editor. Paul Chambers is the host of the daily Hashtag Games on Mastodon. A largely red and orange high-contrast portrait of Paul appears offset near the bottom and to the right edge of the cover. The book has a blurb: "Are you brave enough to play the game?" There's also a fake review from the Catholic Review of Books which reads: "A revolting, adorable, sickness-inducing work of stupef…

“People who socialize more are more resistant to cognitive decline as they get older,”
Dr. Ben Rein said. And, he added, they “have generally larger brains.”
Researchers think that may be because socializing could help to protect against declines in brain volume that happen with age and isolation.
